Phlur Cherry Stem Review: 2025's Dark Leather Cherry

Phlur's 2025 cherry goes dark: brandied fruit, leather, and a smoky ebony drydown.

By Vivir · · Updated
Every gourmand era has a signature fruit, and the 2020s belong to cherry. When Tom Ford released Lost Cherry in 2018, it proved that the note could be adult, boozy and faintly transgressive rather than childish or synthetic. Kayali answered with Burning Cherry, Kilian with Angels' Share, and within five years the cherry had become the most contested territory in designer-adjacent perfumery. By 2025 the interesting question was no longer whether a house would release a cherry, but what it would do with one. Phlur's answer is Cherry Stem, an eau de parfum composed by Clement Gavarry and launched in 2025. The name is the thesis. Where most cherry fragrances chase the glazed, marzipan flesh of the fruit, Cherry Stem is preoccupied with the architecture that surrounds it: the green bitterness of the stem, the tannic grip of leather, the dry smoke of ebony. This is a cherry that has been allowed to grow up. What follows is a full structural analysis of Cherry Stem — its pyramid, its accord architecture, its evolution on skin, its performance envelope, and its position within a crowded and increasingly cynical category. It is a compact fragrance with a modest footprint, and understanding what it does well requires understanding what it deliberately refuses to do.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes are the most extroverted phase of Cherry Stem's life. Black cherry arrives steeped rather than fresh — macerated in brandy, with a distinct liqueur warmth that reads almost like a cherry cordial. Orange peels across the top of the accord and does important structural work: it prevents the opening from tipping into cough-syrup territory, lending a bitter, sunlit edge that keeps the fruit legible. The overall impression is glossy, boozy and slightly narcotic, with a faint almond-adjacent bitterness that belongs to the cherry pit rather than the flesh.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between roughly one and two hours the composition loosens its grip on the liqueur and turns jammy. Sugar and plum thicken the fruit into something closer to preserved cherry or plum compote, while jasmine and red freesia introduce a soft, slightly soapy floral haze that lifts the whole structure off the skin. This is the sweetest and most conventionally gourmand passage of the fragrance. It is also the point at which the leather begins to be felt underneath, like a shadow moving across the fruit.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

At four hours and beyond, Cherry Stem becomes something else entirely. The fruit recedes and the base takes over: a smooth, supple leather accord, dry ebony wood and a caramel that reads as resinous rather than sticky. The result is a warm, slightly smoky, suede-like skin scent with a sweet undertow — closer to a worn leather glove kept in a drawer with dried fruit than to a dessert. It is quiet, intimate, and by this stage sits very close to the body.

Performance Dashboard

⏱️ Longevity 2.5/5

3-4 hours, moderate — short for an eau de parfum, with the base lingering faintly on fabric well beyond skin wear

📢 Projection 3.0/5

moderate — projects to roughly arm's length for the first hour, then recedes quickly toward the skin

💨 Sillage 3.0/5

moderate — a close, personal scent trail rather than a room-filling one

Pros & Cons

  • ✅ Distinctive leather-and-ebony base that separates it from the standard cherry-gourmand template
  • ✅ Excellent value relative to comparable niche cherry fragrances
  • ✅ Highly layerable and forgiving to reapply
  • ✅ The citrus top note gives the opening unusual clarity and lift
  • ❌ Longevity of three to four hours is short for an eau de parfum
  • ❌ Modest projection will frustrate wearers who want a statement scent
  • ❌ The sweet heart phase may read as generic to experienced gourmand wearers
  • ❌ Not suitable for hot weather

Price & Value

$99
50 ml eau de parfum at $99 places Cherry Stem at the accessible end of the niche spectrum, particularly against the $300-plus benchmarks set by its most obvious competitors.

“Strong value. You are paying for a well-constructed, if restrained, composition rather than for concentration or longevity — which is a fair trade at this price, though heavy users will go through a bottle quickly.”

Final Verdict

Cherry Stem is a disciplined, well-argued gourmand that treats cherry as a starting point rather than a destination. Its leather-and-ebony drydown gives it a seriousness that most fragrances in this category lack, and at $99 for 50 ml it is priced with unusual honesty. What it will not do is shout — and if you can accept a fragrance that lives close to the skin and asks to be reapplied, it is one of the more intelligent cherry releases of 2025.
