Scent Journey
The first thirty minutes belong almost entirely to rum. It is not a light, fizzy cocktail rum but a dark, aged, molasses-heavy spirit — boozy and slightly burnt at the edges, with a brown-sugar sweetness that reads almost like caramelized fruit. There is a faintly alcoholic sharpness at the very top that dissipates quickly, leaving a warm, syrupy haze that already hints at the cacao waiting underneath.
Between roughly the first and second hour the composition opens into its true heart. Cacao arrives as dry, bitter, unsweetened cocoa powder rather than chocolate — dusty and faintly earthy. Tobacco follows, cured and honeyed rather than ashen, and the smoke accord threads between them like a filament: birch-tar-adjacent, slightly tarry, never acrid. The three materials interlock so tightly that separating them becomes difficult; the effect is of a single smoldering object rather than three distinct notes.
From the fourth hour onward the sweetness recedes and the base asserts itself. The woody notes are dry, faintly resinous and slightly smoky in their own right — a sandalwood-and-cedar-adjacent structure that carries a trace of the tobacco long after the cacao has faded. The final hours are markedly drier and more austere than the opening, which is the composition's most elegant structural decision: it begins as indulgence and ends as restraint.
Performance Dashboard
8-12 hours on skin, and considerably longer on fabric. The resinous, woody base anchors the composition firmly; this is not a fragrance that disappears after four hours.
Heavy in the first two hours, settling to a substantial arm's-length aura thereafter. Apply with restraint in enclosed spaces.
Strong. Écrin de Fumée leaves a clearly readable trail without becoming a room-filler; two to three sprays is genuinely sufficient.
When to Wear
Pros & Cons
- ✅ Unusually coherent structure — the five listed materials form a single, unified impression rather than a competing pile
- ✅ Excellent longevity and a genuinely dry, austere drydown that avoids the sugar-bomb trap
- ✅ Genuinely unisex; neither the sweetness nor the smoke is gendered
- ✅ Distinctive within the tobacco genre, which is crowded with vanilla-heavy releases
- ❌ Limited seasonal and situational range — effectively a cold-weather, evening-only fragrance
- ❌ The rum opening can read as sharp or boozy to wearers who dislike alcoholic top notes
- ❌ Section d'Or pricing places it firmly in premium territory
- ❌ Smoke and birch-tar accords are a known trigger for headaches in sensitive wearers
Price & Value
“Fair value for collectors who will wear it heavily in winter, poor value for anyone seeking a versatile signature. The concentration and performance justify the outlay; the narrow wearability window does not, for everyone.”
Reformulation History
No significant batch variations reported. As with all Serge Lutens Section d'Or releases, reformulation risk exists over long horizons, but no documented divergence between production years has been widely reported by the collector community.

Layering Ideas
- Layer with a plain vanilla or tonka-forward base to soften the dry, austere finish for evening wear
- Layer with a leather-forward fragrance to amplify the tarry, cured-tobacco facet
- Layer with a single-spray application of a rose oud to introduce a floral-resinous counterpoint to the cacao
- Avoid layering with citrus or aquatic fragrances — the smoke accord will read as dissonant rather than complementary
