Scent Journey
The first thirty minutes are an event. Rose arrives not as a soft cloud but as a cut — dewy, faintly metallic, its petals still beaded with cold water. Geranium sits right beside it, all crushed leaf and sharp green bitterness, giving the opening a bracing, almost astringent edge. There is a faintly soapy, old-fashioned glamour here, the ghost of a dressing table in a European hotel room. Do not judge it in the first five minutes; it is still deciding who it wants to be.
By the one-to-two-hour mark the composition has warmed and widened. Palmarosa — the great unsung hero of this fragrance — threads a grassy, rosy-green ribbon through the heart, softening the geranium's bite and lending the rose a sunlit, almost hay-like glow. The honey begins to seep upward from the base, thick and dark and slightly animalic, coating the petals in something golden and faintly feral. The rose is now fully in bloom: opulent, saturated, unmistakably red.
From four hours onward, the fragrance settles into its most beautiful and most Lutens-like phase. Patchouli arrives — not the sharp, camphoraceous patchouli of a 1990s chypre, but a damp, earthy, almost chocolate-tinged one — and moss follows, cool and green and slightly bitter, like the underside of a stone. The honey remains, but it has lost its sweetness and gained a waxy, resinous depth. What lingers on skin is a shadow of a rose: dark, dry, faintly smoky, and deeply sensual. On fabric it can persist well past the eight-hour mark.
Performance Dashboard
Very strong — eight hours and beyond on skin, considerably longer on fabric. This is a fragrance that outlasts most of the day and survives a shower if you are not careful.
Strong and far-reaching. Widely described by wearers as a one-spray fragrance — two sprays is a declaration, three is a diplomatic incident.
Strong. It fills a room gently but unmistakably, leaving a trail that is noticed before you are.
When to Wear
Pros & Cons
- ✅ A genuinely original, uncompromising rose with real depth and darkness
- ✅ Excellent longevity and projection — exceptional value in terms of wear time per spray
- ✅ Fully unisex; wears beautifully on every skin type
- ✅ The honey-patchouli-moss base gives it a rare, almost vintage chypre gravitas
- ✅ A limited-edition presentation of a modern niche classic
- ❌ The opening is sharp and slightly soapy — it needs twenty minutes to settle
- ❌ Extremely easy to over-apply; one spray genuinely suffices
- ❌ The patchouli and honey facets will alienate those who prefer clean florals
- ❌ Limited-edition availability makes restocking uncertain
- ❌ Too heavy for high summer and for enclosed, scent-sensitive spaces
Price & Value
“Strong value. Given that a single spray delivers a full day of wear, the cost-per-wearing is excellent. The limited-edition status adds a collectible premium, but the juice itself justifies the price independent of scarcity.”
Reformulation History
No significant batch variations reported for the Edition Limitée. Note, however, that this 2023 limited edition is a distinct release from the 2013 original La Fille de Berlin, and wearers comparing the two frequently describe subtle differences in richness and presentation rather than in the core composition.

Layering Ideas
- Layer with a single spray of Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan on the chest to deepen the honeyed base into something resinous, balsamic and nocturnal.
- A dab of Serge Lutens Santal Majuscule on the wrists adds creamy sandalwood warmth without disturbing the rose's architecture.
- For a softer, more daytime-appropriate reading, pair with a clean white musk such as Narciso Rodriguez For Her — the musk blurs the sharper geranium edges and makes the rose more approachable.
- Avoid layering with citrus-forward colognes or bright aquatic freshies; they cut straight through the honeyed rose and leave the composition thin and disjointed.
