Sospiro Perfumes Maraschino Review: Cherry Reimagined

Christian Provenzano's 2024 maraschino gourmand, dissected note by note

By Vivir ·
Few fruits carry as much cultural luggage as the maraschino cherry. The word descends from marasca, the sour cherry of the Dalmatian coast, steeped for centuries in a clear liqueur that the Luxardo family has produced in Zadar since 1821. By the twentieth century the maraschino cherry had migrated from the cocktail glass into the popular imagination, a bright bead at the bottom of a Manhattan, a neon garnish on a sundae. It is a fruit that signifies celebration before it signifies flavour. That is the territory Sospiro Perfumes chose to occupy with Maraschino, a 2024 release composed by Christian Provenzano. It arrives at a moment when the cherry gourmand is once again commercially potent, largely thanks to Tom Ford's Lost Cherry (2018) and the flankers that followed it, and it must therefore answer an uncomfortable question: is this a fresh reading of a familiar theme, or a beautifully executed echo? My conclusion, after extended wear across several seasons, is that Maraschino is a genuinely distinct interpretation. It is brighter, more floral and considerably more transparent than the syrupy almond-liqueur school it superficially resembles. Where Lost Cherry is a cherry steeped in dark spirits and wrapped in tonka, Maraschino is a cherry held up to the light.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

0-30 minutes: a juicy, extroverted surge of cherry and strawberry, with peach adding a soft lactonic fuzz and apple supplying a crisp green edge. Almond arrives a beat later and delivers the maraschino signature. Bright, celebratory and cocktail-hour in character, but restrained enough to leave room for the heart.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

1-2 hours: the fruit recedes faster than expected and powder takes over. Heliotrope and mimosa soften the cherry into something cosmetic and nostalgic, while orris adds a cool, dry, faintly rooty texture and jasmine sambac and rose supply warmth and jammy depth. This is where the fragrance separates itself from syrupy competitors.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

4+ hours: a warm, musky, faintly almondy skin scent. Vanilla and tonka bean form a coumarinic bed, sandalwood adds cream, amber supplies glow and white musk lends a skin-like quality. Vetiver and patchouli, used sparingly, supply a bitter, earthy counterweight that keeps the base from turning to confectionery.

Pros & Cons

  • ✅ A convincing, genuinely maraschino-like cherry-almond opening
  • ✅ A distinctive powdery floral heart built on heliotrope, mimosa and orris
  • ✅ Vetiver and patchouli grounding make it wearable in warm weather, unusual for a cherry gourmand
  • ✅ Comfortably unisex and versatile across daytime and evening wear
  • ✅ Excellent layering candidate thanks to its transparency
  • ❌ Moderate longevity and projection relative to its niche price point
  • ❌ The cherry fades relatively quickly, leaving a musky-almond skin scent
  • ❌ Conceptual overlap with Tom Ford Lost Cherry may deter collectors who already own it
  • ❌ The powdery heart is polarising for those who dislike cosmetic textures
  • ❌ Premium pricing for a composition that does not rely on obviously rare materials

Price & Value

$200-$350
Typical niche pricing for a 100 ml EDP, placing it in direct competition with Tom Ford Lost Cherry and the upper tier of designer-exclusive releases.

“Fair value for wearers who prize refinement, versatility and warm-weather usability over projection; poor value for those who measure a fragrance by its sillage or who are seeking rare raw materials.”

Reformulation History

Maraschino was released in 2024 and is therefore a young fragrance with a short production history. No significant batch variations have been reported to date. As with any fragrance, future reformulation remains possible, and the earliest batches are the ones most likely to reflect the perfumer's original intent.

Who It's For

Ideal For

  • Lovers of fruity gourmands who want something brighter and more floral than the market standard
  • Anyone who enjoys almond, heliotrope or tonka in any form

  • Collectors seeking a softer, more powdery counterpoint to Tom Ford Lost Cherry

Not Recommended For

  • Those who dislike sweet or powdery fragrances on principle
  • Anyone seeking a dark, smoky, boozy cherry in the Cherry Smoke mould
  • Wearers who prioritise enormous projection and room-filling sillage
  • Buyers expecting a literal fresh-fruit cherry rather than a liqueur and confection interpretation

Final Verdict

Sospiro Maraschino is a cherry gourmand with unusual manners: it opens like a cocktail and dries down like pressed powder and a warm neck, and in between it does something few fragrances in its category attempt, letting the light in. It is neither the loudest cherry on the market nor the most conceptually original, but as a genuinely wearable warm-weather cherry it earns its place. Recommended for anyone who has ever wanted a cherry fragrance they could wear in June.
