Scent Journey
The first 30 minutes are bright and skin-close. Pear leads, juicy and slightly sweet, sharpened by bergamot and mandarin orange. Ginger adds a cool, faintly spicy lift that keeps the fruit from turning syrupy. Projection is modest at this stage — this is not a fragrance that announces itself from across the room.
Between one and two hours, orange blossom moves forward and softens the composition into a clean white-floral register. Georgywood, a modern woody material, adds a dry, slightly peppery timber texture underneath. The sweetness recedes and the fragrance becomes noticeably more grown-up and less fruit-forward.
From roughly four hours onward, the base takes over: musk, Ambrofix, Akigalawood and cedar. This is where Blue Talisman earns its reputation. The ambroxan-type Ambrofix gives a warm, skin-like amber glow, while Akigalawood supplies a spicy, woody, faintly oud-like impression — which is why oud appears among the listed accords despite no actual oud note. The finish is smooth, slightly powdery and quietly persistent.
Performance Dashboard
8-10 hours on skin for most wearers, with the base lingering noticeably longer on fabric.
Moderate. The opening sits close to the skin and builds to roughly arm's length over the first hour.
Moderate to strong. It leaves a clear, detectable trail without dominating a room.
When to Wear
Pros & Cons
- Bright, well-blended pear-and-citrus opening that stays crisp rather than syrupy
- Modern woody-musk base built on Ambrofix, Akigalawood and Georgywood, giving it real depth
- Strong 8-10 hour longevity for a fresh-leaning composition
- Genuinely unisex and versatile: office-safe but still interesting
- Holds a solid 4.16 out of 5 community rating on Fragrantica
- 300 to 385 US dollars for 100ml places it firmly in luxury pricing
- Projection is modest at first; it does not deliver a big-bang opening
- The oud accord may disappoint anyone expecting a true oud note
- Market confusion means some shoppers buy Afnan Turathi Electric believing it is the same fragrance
Price & Value
“Reasonable value if you want the original and will wear it regularly in spring and summer. Poor value if you are curious rather than committed — sample first, or try the Afnan alternative.”
Reformulation History
No significant batch variations reported for Ex Nihilo Blue Talisman. As with most fragrances, storage conditions and maceration time can affect how bright the opening reads, but there is no documented reformulation or batch controversy.
Who It's For
Ideal For
- Fans of fresh, fruity-citrus scents that want a woody-musky backbone rather than a plain aquatic
- Warm-weather daily wearers who need something polished enough for an office
- Unisex wearers — the pear, orange blossom and ambroxan balance leans neither masculine nor feminine
- Anyone who enjoys modern ambroxan-driven niche compositions
Not Recommended For
- Wearers who want a loud, room-filling statement fragrance
- Those who dislike sweet or fruity openings
- Budget shoppers — the Ex Nihilo original is a 300-dollar-plus purchase, and the Afnan alternative is the sensible entry point
- Anyone hunting for a genuine oud fragrance; the oud accord here is a woody-molecule impression, not real oud

Layering Ideas
- Layer with a clean white musk or a light cedar-forward fragrance to push the drydown further into the skin-scent direction.
- Pair with a soft woody-amber base if you want more weight for evening wear; the fruity opening takes added depth well.
- Avoid layering with heavy gourmands or dense ouds — the pear and orange blossom will be buried rather than complemented.
