Scent Journey
The first thirty minutes are the most bracing and the most distinctive. Incense arrives first — not the cold, churchy frankincense of a gothic cathedral, but a warm, resinous, slightly sweet smoke that curls upward like a snuffed candle. Rhubarb cuts through it with a tart, almost fruity acidity, faintly green and faintly sour, while vetiver grounds everything with its earthy, root-like rasp. The overall impression is mineral, cool, and unusually refined for the price point — a green-smoky accord that feels carved rather than blended.
Between one and two hours, the composition softens dramatically and reveals its heart. Tonka bean steps forward with its almond-creamy, faintly powdery sweetness, smoothing the sharp edges of the rhubarb and lending the whole thing a plush, almost edible warmth. Rose appears as a shadow rather than a statement — a dark, velvety petal tucked behind the tonka, contributing depth and a whisper of old-world romance without ever tipping into florals. This is the most wearable phase of the fragrance, and arguably its most beautiful.
From roughly the fourth hour onward, Portrait Abstract becomes a different animal entirely. The leather arrives — supple, slightly animalic, more suede than saddle — and settles into a bed of amber, sandalwood and cedar. The amber is deep and balsamic, the sandalwood creamy and faintly lactonic, the cedar dry and pencil-shaving sharp. What remains on skin is a warm, smoky, resinous skin-scent with a soft powdery halo. The sweetness recedes, the leather asserts itself, and the fragrance grows quieter and more intimate as the hours pass — but it does not disappear.
Performance Dashboard
8+ hours, above average. On skin it comfortably clears an eight-hour workday, and on fabric it can persist well into the following day. The resinous amber-leather base is the reason: heavy molecules that cling.
Above average for the first few hours, projecting roughly an arm's length before settling closer to the skin during the drydown.
Strong. This is not a shy fragrance. It leaves a visible trail in the first three to four hours, filling a room gently rather than aggressively.
When to Wear
Pros & Cons
- Extraordinary value — niche-adjacent quality at a mass-market price
- Distinctive rhubarb-incense opening that avoids the usual sweet-amber clichés
- Strong longevity and sillage for an EDP in this price bracket
- Genuinely unisex; it reads as leathery and smoky rather than gendered
- A convincing, widely recognized alternative to a far more expensive niche fragrance
- The animalic leather base will be polarizing — some noses read it as harsh
- Slightly sweeter and heavier than the niche fragrance it is compared to
- Performance can tip into overwhelming in warm weather or enclosed spaces
- The perfumer is uncredited, so there is no authorship to follow
- Limited availability in physical retail outside the Gulf region and online channels
Price & Value
“One of the strongest value propositions in the current budget-niche segment. Even at the top of its price band it undercuts its closest niche reference by a factor of four or more.”
Reformulation History
No significant batch variations reported. Afnan's production for this line appears consistent, and the community has not flagged reformulation concerns since the 2023 launch.

Layering Ideas
- Layer with a single spray of a bright, clean vetiver or grapefruit-forward cologne to lift the opening and make the composition more wearable in spring.
- Pair with a light vanilla or tonka-focused body oil to amplify the creamy heart and soften the animalic leather in the base.
- For a deeper, more nocturnal effect, layer over an unscented amber or oud body cream — the resinous base will bloom and the projection will intensify.
- Avoid layering with sweet gourmands; the tonka and amber already carry enough sweetness, and added sugar will flatten the rhubarb's tartness.
