Scent Journey
The first thirty minutes belong to pear — but not the syrupy, canned-pear accord that dominated the 2010s. This is a cool, faintly metallic pear, the fruit still on the skin of the knife. Osmanthus threads apricot and soft leather through it, and rose arrives early, giving the opening a flushed, velvety pinkness rather than simple juiciness. There is a clean, almost aquatic lift here that keeps the sweetness from turning sticky.
Between one and two hours, the composition turns. The fruit recedes and the heart reveals its true character: iris, cool and powdered, dusted over a creamy orchid and a jasmine that has been deliberately muted rather than amplified. This is the most elegant passage of the fragrance — a violet-tinged, suede-like floral that reads as expensive and quietly adult. The powder is present but never dusty; it is the powder of a pressed compact, not an attic.
From four hours onward, Extatic settles into its base with remarkable composure. Cashmere wood provides the soft, enveloping texture that gives the fragrance its name-worthy comfort, while sandalwood and amyris add a creamy, faintly balsamic warmth. The leather is the surprise: it never becomes animalic or harsh, instead reading as pale suede — the inside of a glove, a soft clutch, a well-kept jacket. The final hours are close to the skin, warm, and slightly sweet in a resinous rather than edible way.
Performance Dashboard
6-8 hours on skin, with the base lingering noticeably longer on fabric. The drydown is tenacious even as it grows quiet.
Moderate, roughly an arm's length for the first two to three hours before settling close to the skin.
Moderate. It leaves a soft, elegant trail rather than a cloud, and is best appreciated by those within conversation distance.
When to Wear
Pros & Cons
- Unusual iris-and-soft-leather base that elevates it above standard fruity-florals
- Elegant, adult sweetness that avoids gourmand cliché
- Excellent value at discount pricing for a 90ml Eau de Parfum
- Comfortable, skin-close drydown with genuine cashmere-wood warmth
- Moderate projection and sillage will disappoint those wanting a statement scent
- The powdery iris heart is polarizing and not for everyone
- Widely misnamed as 'Extase,' which makes it harder to find and discuss
- Not versatile enough for high summer heat
Price & Value
“One of the strongest blind-buy values in the Balmain line, provided you enjoy powder and iris. Buy it for autumn and winter; you will not regret the 90ml.”
Reformulation History
No significant batch variations reported. As with most modern designer compositions, later batches may show marginally softer projection as reformulation regulations evolve, but the core pear-iris-leather signature has remained consistent.

Layering Ideas
- Layer with a single spray of a vanilla or tonka-heavy base to deepen the cashmere-wood drydown for winter evenings.
- Pair with a rose soliflore to amplify the opening's flushed, velvety rose and push the composition further toward classic femininity.
- Mist a woody-amber fragrance on the back of the neck while wearing Extatic on the wrists to give the scent a longer, more architectural trail.
- For daytime wear in spring, apply Extatic to the décolletage only and keep the wrists bare — the powder reads lighter and the pear stays brighter.
