Scent Journey
Saffron and speculoos arrive together — a leathery, biscuit-sweet combination that reads as warm and faintly edible. Cinnamon and nutmeg sharpen the edges, giving the opening a dry, dusty spice quality rather than a syrupy one. For the first twenty to thirty minutes the fragrance projects noticeably and announces itself clearly.
As the spices settle, vanilla and jasmine move forward. The vanilla is deep and rounded rather than sugary, and the jasmine is subtle — a soft floral sheen, not a full white-floral statement. Balsamic materials begin to surface, and the scent shifts from a spiced gourmand into something warmer, smoother and more resinous.
Sandalwood and leather take over, supported by styrax, Peru balsam and patchouli. What remains is a creamy, softly smoky, faintly powdery skin scent with a persistent sweet-resinous undertone. Projection drops considerably by this point, but the base clings well and stays detectable for hours.
Performance Dashboard
6-8 hours on skin; noticeably longer on fabric, especially coat collars and scarves.
Moderate at the start, then increasingly close-to-skin once the base notes take hold.
Moderate. People near you will notice it, particularly in the first two hours, but it will not fill a room.
When to Wear
Pros & Cons
- Distinctive saffron and speculoos opening that is hard to find elsewhere
- Well-constructed balsamic and leather drydown with real depth
- Genuinely unisex and works across a wide range of skin types
- Fills the gap left by a discontinued cult favourite
- Six to eight hours of longevity from a moderate application
- Limited to cold weather; heavy and cloying in heat and humidity
- Projection fades to close-to-skin well before the fragrance is finished
- The sweet-spiced opening is polarising and divides opinion
- Premium pricing for a seasonal, occasion-driven scent
Price & Value
“Fair value for anyone who loved the original Dries Van Noten, since you are buying the same composition at retail rather than collector prices. Sample first if the profile is new to you.”
Reformulation History
No significant batch variations reported. As a 2026 release, Northern Love is still in its first production runs and there is no meaningful reformulation track record. Wearers comparing it directly to vintage bottles of Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle should expect minor differences, since raw material sourcing shifts over a decade, but no systematic variation has been documented.

Layering Ideas
- Layer one spray of L'Eau d'Hiver over Northern Love to lift the opening and make it wearable in early spring.
- Add a single spray of a dry, vetiver-forward fragrance in the base to sharpen the finish and cut the sweetness.
- Apply a light amber or plain vanilla underneath to extend the drydown without altering the character.
- Avoid pairing with fresh citrus, aquatic or clean musk fragrances — the balsamic base swallows them and the result turns muddy.
