Ex Nihilo Fragrance review

Ex Nihilo Vendomania Extrait de Parfum: A Full Review

Saffron, cocoa and oud — Ex Nihilo's darkest gourmand, dissected

By Vivir ·
Ex Nihilo takes its name from the Latin ex nihilo — out of nothing — and its founding premise from a thoroughly Parisian conviction: that a fragrance should be built the way a piece of haute joaillerie is built, from materials chosen for intrinsic worth rather than novelty. Founded in Paris in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Lozé, the house established a template the industry has since imitated without quite matching: elevated concentrations, an unapologetic use of expensive naturals, and a refusal to sort its output into masculine and feminine shelves. Vendomania Extrait de Parfum, released in 2026, is the fullest expression of that philosophy to date. It is a fragrance that opens on saffron and bergamot, settles into cocoa powder and iris, and finishes in a leather-oud-vanilla base so densely woven that the individual materials become difficult to prise apart. It is not a fragrance that announces its gender. It announces its presence. Composed by Jordi Fernández, it sits at the intersection of three contemporary currents — the saffron-leather oud, the dark gourmand, and the powdery iris — and refuses to choose between them. This review examines Vendomania in full: its heritage, its compositional architecture, its evolution on skin, its measured performance, and its standing within the crowded field of oud-leather extraits that has emerged over the past decade.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes belong to saffron. It arrives dry, faintly metallic, with the hay-and-suede bitterness that defines the spice at its most leathery. Bergamot provides a brief, cold citrus flare — perhaps two or three minutes of limpid brightness — before it is absorbed entirely. Cocoa powder is already visible at the edges of the opening, dusting the saffron with a bittersweet, almost savoury dryness.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between the first and second hour the composition rotates. Cocoa powder and iris take the centre, producing a texture that is genuinely powdered rather than merely sweet — the orris contributes its cool, rooty, carrot-and-violet duality, while the cocoa supplies a pyrazine bitterness that keeps the heart from tipping into dessert. Jasmine, likely an absolute or a faithful reconstruction, breathes underneath with a faint indolic animalism. Leather begins to firm up beneath the powder.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From the fourth hour onward, Vendomania settles into its true character: a resinous, creamy, faintly smoky leather-oud accord, sweetened by sandalwood and vanilla and given an earthy, camphoraceous floor by patchouli. The oud reads more as a smoky-resinous wood than a barnyard animalic, and the vanilla is deep rather than sugary. The extrait concentration means this phase is long, linear in the best sense, and remarkably stable.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

8-10 hours on skin; considerably longer on fabric, where the extrait base clings for a full day

Projection 4.0/5

Above average; roughly arm's length for the first two to three hours, then settling into a closer, denser aura

Sillage 4.0/5

Above average — community scoring sits near 8.5/10, and the trail is clearly perceptible to others without being invasive

Pros & Cons

  • Exceptional material density and an unusually stable extrait drydown
  • Genuinely unisex — no gendered marketing scaffolding required
  • Outstanding longevity and above-average sillage for the concentration
  • Distinctive without being bizarre; complex without being chaotic
  • Layers unusually well for a fragrance this saturated
  • Premium pricing in line with the house, but steep in absolute terms
  • The saffron-leather opening is polarising and can read metallic to some noses
  • Heavy and sweet in high heat; effectively a cold-weather composition
  • Purists may find the oud accord more reconstruction than agarwood
  • Limited distribution compared with designer oud-leathers

Price & Value

$350-$450 for 100ml
Mid-to-high within the niche extrait tier. Comparable Ex Nihilo extraits and rival oud-leather extraits from Initio, Amouage and Maison Francis Kurkdjian occupy the same band, so Vendomania is priced at market rather than above it.

“Expensive, but defensible. The extrait concentration, the density of the base and the eight-to-ten-hour wear time mean cost-per-wearing is more reasonable than the headline figure suggests. Buy it if the profile is genuinely your register; do not buy it as a blind purchase.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. Ex Nihilo is a small-batch house with tight production control, and no reformulation has been documented since the 2026 launch.

Who It's For

Final Verdict

Vendomania Extrait de Parfum is Ex Nihilo working at full capacity: a saffron-leather-oud extrait with a cocoa-and-iris heart that manages to be simultaneously dark, powdery and gourmand without collapsing into any one register. Its performance is genuinely above average, its construction is scholarly, and its price is high but consistent with the tier it competes in. It is not a beginner's oud — but for the collector who already knows they love saffron leather, it is close to essential.
