Frederic Malle French Lover 20 Ans: A Vetiver Icon

Pierre Bourdon's green, smoky vetiver reverie, reissued for the house's 20th anniversary.

By Vivir · · Updated
Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle has never been a house that chases the market. It publishes perfume the way a fine independent press publishes books: each composition attributed to its author, each one granted the freedom to be difficult, austere, or exquisitely strange. In 2020, to mark the twentieth anniversary of the house, Malle returned to a handful of its founding texts. Among them was French Lover, Pierre Bourdon's cool, green, faintly feral essay on galbanum, cedar, patchouli, vetiver and incense, reissued as French Lover 20 Ans. Spray it and you will not find fruit. You will not find sugar, or vanilla, or the warm edible comfort that dominates so much of the contemporary shelf. What you find instead is weather. Angelica arrives first, that strange, bitter, almost vegetal herb halfway between celery seed and gin botanicals, sharpened by a flicker of chili pepper that is less heat than friction. Then galbanum unspools its snapped-stem greenness, cold and sappy and unmistakably serious, while cedar shavings drift in like sawdust on a workshop floor. Beneath it all lies the floor of the forest: patchouli stripped of its patchouli-rose cliche, vetiver with its roots still muddy, and a thread of incense smoke rising thin and grey through the canopy. This is not a fragrance that asks to be liked. It is a fragrance that asks to be understood, and once understood, it is very hard to put down.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes are cold, green and faintly medicinal. Angelica leads with a bitter, gin-like herbaceousness, while chili pepper supplies a dry, peppery friction rather than heat. Galbanum begins to unfurl almost immediately, snapping the composition into sharp focus.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

One to two hours in, the fragrance settles into its heart of galbanum and cedar. The green resin becomes sap rather than stem, cool and slightly sulfurous, while cedar introduces dry pencil-shaving warmth. This is the most austere and most classically French phase of the wear.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From four hours onward the base takes over: dark, earthy patchouli in its raw camphoraceous form, rooty smoky vetiver, and a cool grey incense that binds the two together. The finish is dry, mineral and quietly magnificent, lingering on skin and fabric long after the green top notes have vanished.

Performance Dashboard

⏱️ Longevity 4.0/5

6-8 hours on skin, with the resinous base clinging noticeably longer on fabric and collar.

📢 Projection 3.0/5

Moderate; it sits within roughly arm's length and rewards those who lean in.

💨 Sillage 3.0/5

Moderate. It creates a discreet, textured aura rather than a room-filling cloud.

Pros & Cons

  • ✅ Exceptional raw-material quality and a genuinely distinctive green-spicy signature
  • ✅ A masterclass in dry, resinous woody construction from a legendary perfumer
  • ✅ Versatile enough for the office while remaining interesting enough for evening
  • ✅ Timeless rather than trend-driven; unlikely to feel dated in a decade
  • ❌ Very limited community voting data at the time of writing, so ratings carry low statistical confidence
  • ❌ The galbanum and angelica opening is challenging for wearers raised on sweet modern masculines
  • ❌ Moderate projection and sillage, which some will find too polite for the price
  • ❌ Premium Editions de Parfums pricing

Price & Value

$200-$300
Positioned at the upper end of the designer-niche spectrum, in line with the rest of the Editions de Parfums line for a 100ml Eau de Parfum.

“Expensive, but defensible for collectors of green and woody classics. The concentration and material quality justify the outlay; those seeking mass appeal or powerhouse performance will find better value elsewhere.”

Final Verdict

French Lover 20 Ans is not a crowd-pleaser and was never meant to be. It is a masterclass in green-woody restraint from one of the great perfumers of the modern era: austere, resinous, quietly magnificent, and worth every minute of the patience it demands.
