Hermès Fragrance review

Hermès Terre d'Hermes Flacon H 2020

The collector's flacon of Terre d'Hermès Parfum — same mineral-woody signature, new presentation.

By Vivir ·
In 2020, Hermès released a limited collector's edition of one of the most recognisable men's fragrances of the modern era. The Terre d'Hermès Flacon H 2020 Parfum takes Jean-Claude Ellena's mineral-woody composition — grapefruit, orange, flint, oak moss — and houses it in a presentation bottle built around the letter H. It is a piece of object design as much as it is a fragrance release. The first question any buyer should ask is whether this is a new scent or a new bottle. It is the latter. The Flacon H 2020 is the Parfum concentration of Terre d'Hermès in a limited-edition flacon. The juice is Ellena's Woody Chypre, unchanged in character: dry, earthy, quietly austere, and built around the smell of wet stone and citrus peel rather than sugar, vanilla or loud spice. That distinction matters, because Terre d'Hermès has been in continuous production since the original Eau de Toilette launched in 2006, and it has spawned a whole family of flankers. Collectors who already own the standard Parfum bottle should understand exactly what they are paying for here. Newcomers, meanwhile, should understand what the scent itself does on skin — because it is one of the few designer masculines that genuinely resists trend cycles.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first 30 minutes are bright and bracing. Grapefruit leads with a bitter-citrus bite, sharp and faintly sulphurous, while orange softens the edge without sweetening it. A cool, stony mineral undertone is already visible just below the surface, signalling where the fragrance is heading.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between one and two hours, flint moves to the front. This is the most distinctive phase of Terre d'Hermès: cold, dry, slightly dusty, with a peppery prickle from the fresh spicy accord. The fragrance becomes quieter and more textured rather than louder.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

After four hours the base takes over — woodsy notes for structure, oak moss for earthy, faintly bitter depth, and benzoin for a soft resinous warmth that keeps the composition from turning austere. What remains is a dry, mossy, gently sweet skin scent that stays close and stays recognisable.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

6-8 hours on skin; clearly present for the first four hours, then a skin scent. Lasts considerably longer on clothing.

Projection 3.0/5

Moderate. Projects clearly for the first two hours, then settles close to the body. Two to three sprays is the sensible application.

Sillage 3.0/5

Moderate. Creates a defined personal space of roughly an arm's length rather than filling a room.

Pros & Cons

  • Genuinely distinctive mineral-woody signature that has not been diluted by imitation
  • High-quality, restrained composition by Jean-Claude Ellena
  • Extremely versatile — office, casual and evening wear
  • Works across spring, summer and autumn, and remains wearable in winter
  • Limited-edition presentation with collector appeal
  • Dry, mature character that avoids sweet or synthetic clichés
  • Moderate projection and sillage — not a performance powerhouse
  • Premium pricing over the standard Parfum bottle for the same juice
  • Limited availability once the run sells through
  • Bitter citrus and oak moss are polarising
  • Six to eight hours of longevity is good but not exceptional for a Parfum

Price & Value

$100-$160
Upper-middle tier of designer pricing for a 75ml bottle, below niche houses and above mass-market designers. The scent itself justifies the money; the limited flacon adds a presentation premium.

“Reasonable at retail for buyers who want both the fragrance and the bottle. Poor value at inflated secondary-market prices, and unnecessary if you simply want to smell like Terre d'Hermès Parfum.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations have been reported for this limited flacon edition. As with all modern fragrances containing oak moss, reformulation pressure from IFRA restrictions is a long-term consideration across the Terre d'Hermès line, and older bottles may smell marginally mossier and deeper in the base. For the Parfum specifically, community-reported differences are minor and largely within normal production tolerance.

Who It's For

Ideal For

  • Men who prefer dry, earthy, citrus-driven fragrances over sweet or gourmand styles
  • Professionals who need an office-safe scent that still has character
  • Anyone looking for a signature fragrance that works across seasons
  • Collectors of Hermès and of Jean-Claude Ellena's work
  • Wearers who want a masculine that does not smell like the current trend cycle

Not Recommended For

  • Those who want strong projection and room-filling sillage
  • Wearers who prefer vanilla, amber or sweet spice
  • People who dislike bitter citrus or oak moss
  • Buyers shopping purely on price, since the standard Parfum bottle delivers the same juice for less

Final Verdict

Terre d'Hermès Flacon H 2020 Parfum is a beautifully judged composition in a collector's bottle. The scent itself — bitter citrus, cold flint, dry woods and oak moss — remains one of the most original masculines of its generation, and the Parfum concentration gives it the density the idea deserves. Buy it if you want the fragrance and value the limited-edition flacon; skip it if you simply want to smell like Terre d'Hermès, because the standard Parfum bottle delivers the same experience for less.
