Laboratorio Olfattivo Salina Review: A Salty Sicilian Dream

David Maruitte’s ode to the Aeolian Islands: sun-scorched sand, pine, and sea spray in a bottle

There are perfumes that simply smell pleasant, and then there are those that become a portal—a fragrant key unlocking a world of salt-crusted rocks, sunbaked wood, and the endless sigh of the Mediterranean. Laboratorio Olfattivo Salina, launched in 2013, belongs decisively to the latter category. Conceived by perfumer David Maruitte, this unisex Eau de Parfum is an homage to the tiny Aeolian island of Salina, a volcanic jewel off the coast of Sicily where capers grow wild and the sea changes colour a dozen times a day. From the first spray, Salina announces itself with a startling clarity: a burst of lemon peel so vivid you can almost feel the textured rind under your fingers, immediately cut by the bracing bite of pine needles and a mineralic marine salt that is neither sweet nor floral. It is an invitation to leave the city behind and step onto a shore where the only sounds are the crunch of dry sand and the cry of gulls. Maruitte has not tried to replicate the ocean in a generic way; instead, he has captured the specific, almost arid scent of the Sicilian coastline in high summer—hot, gritty, and exhilarating. What makes Salina so compelling is its refusal to be merely an aquatic fragrance. While its core is undeniably marine, the perfume is layered with herbal bitterness (wormwood, myrtle) and a soft, almost animalic warmth from vanilla and white musk. It is a paradox: fresh yet deep, saline yet comfortably woody. For anyone who has ever dreamed of escaping to a sun-drenched island, this fragrance is the next best thing to booking a flight.

Salina is a masterclass in minimalism—a few carefully chosen notes that together conjure an entire world. It may not last all day, but its beauty lies in its intimacy and authenticity. For lovers of the sea who want something more nuanced than a standard aquatic, Salina is essential.
