Lancôme Over The Top Review: Green, Bright, Modern

Lancôme turns tomato leaf and Grasse jasmine into a modern green icon

By Vivir ·
For the better part of a decade, the fragrance industry has been eating its vegetables. Tomato leaf, fig leaf, basil, rhubarb, even pea have migrated from the farmers' market to the perfumer's organ, riding a broader cultural swing away from sugar-drenched gourmands and toward something greener, cleaner, more alive. Call it garden-to-bottle: a reaction to the vanilla-industrial complex, an extension of the farm-to-table ethos, and a quiet flex by perfumers who would rather evoke a rain-soaked allotment than a bakery counter. Most of that energy has come from niche and indie houses. What makes Lancôme Over The Top notable is that it arrives from one of the most commercially powerful names in French beauty — and it arrives without apology. This is not a softened, focus-grouped green. It opens with a genuinely bitter, sappy tomato leaf accord, threads it with jasmine absolute, and settles into a clean, softly woody base. It is a cologne in structure and a statement in tone. Released in 2025 and composed by master perfumer Carlos Benaïm, Over The Top sits inside Lancôme's long-running Ô collection — the citrus-cologne family that began with Ô de Lancôme in 1969 and later spun out into Ô Oui! and Ô de L'Orangerie. Where those leaned bright, sunny and orange-blossom pretty, Over The Top leans vegetal, mineral and slightly wild. It is the Ô for people who keep a herb garden on the balcony and a linen shirt on standby.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first spray is a shock of green. Tomato leaf arrives immediately — bitter, wet, almost vegetal, with a faint metallic-mineral shimmer that reads as cold water on leaves. The fruity notes hover underneath, giving the opening a juiciness that keeps it from tipping into pure bitterness. This is the most divisive phase of the fragrance, and it is also the most distinctive. If you have ever wanted to smell like a garden in June, this is the thirty minutes you are paying for.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

As the green notes burn off, the jasmine takes over. The transition is smoother than you might expect: the bitterness of the leaf and the creaminess of the flower share a certain sappy, living quality, so the handoff feels organic rather than abrupt. At this stage Over The Top is at its most balanced — green enough to feel fresh, floral enough to feel human, and quietly radiant in the way that real jasmine absolute tends to be.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

The woods take the wheel. What remains is a soft, clean, slightly powdery-smooth skin scent with a ghost of green still clinging to it. The jasmine fades to a memory rather than disappearing, and the tomato leaf leaves behind a faint, pleasant bitterness that some wearers describe as soap-like and others as sun-warmed skin. It sits close, but it lasts.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

6-8 hours on skin, which is exceptional for a fresh green Eau de Toilette

strong for the first hour or two, easily detectable across a room before settling closer to the body

moderate to heavy — it leaves a clear trail and clings to fabric and collars long after the skin has quieted

Pros & Cons

  • A genuinely distinctive tomato leaf opening — rare in designer fragrance
  • Real Grasse jasmine absolute in the heart, giving depth beyond its price bracket
  • Truly unisex; the composition carries no gendered signalling
  • Excellent performance for an EDT: six to eight hours with strong early projection
  • Versatile and office-appropriate
  • The opening is polarising and can read bitter or sharp to some noses
  • Not a cold-weather fragrance; it thins out in winter
  • Limited availability and a relatively high price for a fresh EDT
  • Little to offer anyone who wants sweetness, warmth or sensuality

Price & Value

$80-$130
Upper-middle tier for a designer 100ml Eau de Toilette, but justified by a composition built around a real floral absolute rather than an entirely synthetic palette.

“Fair value if you wear green fragrances regularly. If you are a gourmand or oriental devotee experimenting outside your comfort zone, sample first — this is not a blind-buy fragrance.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. Over The Top is a 2025 release still in its first production cycle, so there is no meaningful data on reformulation or batch inconsistency. Any current batch should be representative.

Final Verdict

Lancôme Over The Top is the rare designer release that feels like it was made by people who actually wanted to smell something new. The tomato leaf is uncompromising, the Grasse jasmine is real, and the performance is better than an EDT has any right to be. It will not be for everyone — the 3.55 community score is a fair reflection of how divisive that opening is — but for anyone who loves green, aromatic, garden-fresh fragrance, it is one of the most interesting things to come out of a French heritage house in years.
