Lorenzo Pazzaglia Fom Review: Whiskey, Leather & Smoke

A barrel-aged booze bomb of birch tar, oud and leather — bold, polarizing, unforgettable.

By Vivir ·
Most niche releases arrive whispering. Lorenzo Pazzaglia’s Fom arrives with the door kicked open, a glass of Scotch in one hand and a lit cheroot in the other. Launched in 2022 as an extrait-strength, unisex composition, it is the olfactory equivalent of the friend who insists on building a fire in the middle of July — excessive, magnetic and impossible to ignore. The house frames Fom as a winter-fireplace concept: Scotch whisky and barrel-aged rhum poured over birch tar, elemi and labdanum warmth, then softened by a caramel heart and grounded in leather, agarwood, cedar, myrrh and oakmoss. The official pyramid reads like a bar menu crossed with a saddlery. Olfactory family: Oriental Woody. Dominant declared note: rhum. And yet, if you spend any time in fragrance communities, you’ll notice Fom doesn’t get polite nods — it gets arguments. On Fragrantica it holds a 4.14 out of 5 across 233 votes, which sounds like consensus until you read the reviews. Some wearers describe the boozy opening as sour, sharp, even “college-party”; others call it a smoky-leather dark gem and refuse to wear anything else from November to February. This review exists to help you figure out which camp you belong to before you commit.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first 0–30 minutes are a controlled explosion: whisky and rhum hit simultaneously, sweetened by caramel and lifted — barely — by bergamot and the lemony-resinous snap of elemi. It reads as a spirit poured over hot stone, boozy and slightly sharp. This is the phase that divides people; those sensitive to sour fermented facets may recoil here.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Roughly 1–2 hours in, the alcohol burns off and birch tar takes the wheel, dragging labdanum’s ambered, leather-adjacent warmth behind it. The caramel recedes from dessert-sweet to a burnt-sugar glaze, and the composition starts to smell less like a bar and more like a fireplace in a room full of old furniture.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From 4 hours onward Fom becomes a skin scent with teeth: leather, agarwood, cedar, myrrh and oakmoss settle into a resinous, faintly animalic smoke. The projection narrows dramatically but the scent itself lingers on fabric and skin for the better part of a day, finishing dry, woody and quietly leathery rather than sweet.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

9–12 hours on skin and considerably longer on fabric, consistent with an extrait-strength birch tar, oud and leather base.

Projection 4.0/5

Heavy for the first one to two hours as the smoky birch tar and boozy opening radiate; it then settles into a close-to-moderate resinous skin scent.

Sillage 4.0/5

Strong to heavy — Fom leaves a visible trail in a room and clings to scarves, wool and coat collars for days.

Pros & Cons

  • Genuine extrait-strength performance: 9–12 hours with heavy early projection
  • Distinctive whisky-and-rhum opening that few houses attempt this convincingly
  • Beautiful birch tar-to-leather transition that rewards patience
  • Excellent value per wear given the small bottles and high concentration
  • The boozy opening reads sour or “college-party” to a significant minority
  • Very high blind-buy risk — sampling is essentially mandatory
  • Too heavy and smoky for offices, warm weather or shared spaces
  • Limited availability and small bottle sizes for a scent you may want to spray liberally

Price & Value

€115–€159 (28ml–50ml)
Extrait de Parfum concentration, resin- and tar-heavy formula, and small-format bottles make the per-wear cost surprisingly reasonable for a niche independent house.

“Fair value for an extrait of this density — provided you sample first and love it. Splurging blind on a polarizing booze bomb is the only real money risk here.”

Final Verdict

Fom is not a fragrance you casually add to a rotation — it is a season, a mood and a commitment. If you love birch tar, leather and dark spirits, it delivers one of the most convincing whisky-and-fireplace experiences in modern niche perfumery at genuinely fair extrait pricing. If you want to be liked by everyone in the room, look elsewhere; Fom would rather be remembered than approved of.
