Maison Alhambra The Tux Review: Black-Tie Luxury for $25

A dark, polished patchouli-vanilla-amber that mirrors YSL Tuxedo at a fraction of the cost.

Some fragrances announce themselves from across the room. Others walk in quietly, take the seat at the head of the table, and let everyone else wonder who they are. Maison Alhambra's The Tux belongs firmly to the second category. It is a scent built on restraint: a dark, polished patchouli wrapped in vanilla and amber, sharpened with a cool spice that keeps the sweetness honest. It does not shout. It does not need to. Released in 2022 by the Dubai-based house Maison Alhambra, The Tux is a unisex eau de parfum that has become one of the most discussed budget releases of the past several years, and for good reason. It is a remarkably faithful interpretation of Yves Saint Laurent's Tuxedo, the 2015 composition by Juliette Karagueuzoglou that retails for many multiples of what The Tux costs. On Fragrantica, where it has accumulated well over a thousand votes, it holds a 4.37 out of 5, a score that would be respectable for a niche release at ten times the price. This is the story of a twenty-five dollar bottle that behaves like a two-hundred-and-fifty dollar one, and of the strange, wonderful alchemy that happens when a Middle Eastern clone house gets everything right.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first spray is a shock of cool spice: dry, peppery, almost austere, with a faint metallic shimmer that reads as sophistication rather than sharpness. It is a formal opening, the olfactory equivalent of a handshake held a beat too long. Some wearers find it slightly brisk at this stage; give it ten minutes and the edges round off beautifully.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

As the spice recedes, patchouli takes centre stage and this becomes the most beautiful phase of the fragrance. It is dark, smooth and faintly earthy, with a soft floral thread running through like a silk lining. Beneath it, amber begins to glow, and the whole composition takes on the warmth of the inside of a tailored jacket.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

By the fourth hour the scent has settled into a warm, vanillic amber with a dry woody backbone and a whisper of powder. It is intimate now, closer to the skin, but it never disappears. On fabric it lingers into the following morning as a soft, sweet-woody echo that is genuinely lovely to wake up to.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

Seven to ten hours on skin is the reviewer consensus, and it comfortably exceeds twelve on fabric. For an eau de parfum at this price point, that is exceptional.

Projection 4.0/5

Strong for the first two to three hours, then settling into a moderate, arm's-length aura. Two to three sprays is plenty; four is a statement.

Sillage 4.0/5

Strong. The Tux leaves a trail: a dark, sweet-spicy wake that people notice when you pass. Not a nuclear cloud, but unmistakably present.

Pros & Cons

  • Extremely close to YSL Tuxedo at roughly a tenth of the price
  • Seven to ten hours of longevity with strong sillage
  • Dark, polished patchouli-vanilla-amber that reads expensive
  • Genuinely unisex and versatile for evening wear
  • Outstanding value at $18 to $30 for 100ml
  • Not an original composition; it is a deliberate clone
  • Patchouli-dominant, so it will not suit patchouli sceptics
  • Can feel heavy or syrupy in hot weather
  • Slightly less depth and refinement than the original Tuxedo
  • Availability and naming can be confusing following the reported rename

Price & Value

$18-$30
Exceptional. Roughly 100ml of eau de parfum for the price of a casual dinner, delivering performance that rivals fragrances costing ten times as much.

“One of the great bargains in modern perfumery. There is no honest way to argue that it is not worth the money.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations have been widely reported. The principal complication is naming rather than formulation: the fragrance was reportedly renamed 'Winsome' following legal pressure, so bottles may appear under either name with the same juice inside.

Who It's For

Ideal For

  • Anyone who wants to smell expensive without spending like it
  • Those building a small, deliberate wardrobe with one reliable evening scent
  • Wearers who love patchouli, vanilla and amber in dark, polished form
  • People who want a Tuxedo-style signature for travel, work or everyday wear

Not Recommended For

  • Anyone who dislikes patchouli, which is the spine of the composition
  • Wearers who prefer fresh, citrusy or aquatic profiles
  • Those seeking a hot-weather signature scent
  • Purists who will always prefer the original YSL Tuxedo

Final Verdict

Maison Alhambra The Tux is a dark, smooth, quietly confident patchouli-vanilla-amber that punches absurdly far above its price. It is not the most original fragrance you will ever own, and it does not pretend to be. What it is, is a beautifully executed, long-lasting, compliment-generating evening scent that costs less than a decent dinner, and that is a rare and genuinely useful thing to have in a collection.
