Matiere Premiere Bois d'Ebene — Matière Première Bois d'Ébène Review: Dark Wood Reimagined

Brazilian cabreuva, patchouli and cypriol in Guichard's dark woody overdose

By Vivir ·
There are perfumes that announce themselves and perfumes that accumulate. Matière Première's Bois d'Ébène, released in 2019, belongs firmly to the second category. It opens with a cool, resinous flicker of juniper and cardamom, then settles into a long, dark, almost geological woody register that has made it one of the most quietly influential niche releases of the past half-decade. It is a fragrance about weight, density and texture rather than about prettiness, and it rewards the wearer who is willing to wait for it. The name is a deliberate provocation. True ebony, the near-black heartwood of Diospyros species, yields no commercially meaningful essential oil and appears in no perfumer's organ. What Aurélien Guichard has built instead is the sensation of ebony: a woody-amber architecture assembled from Brazilian cabreuva, Paraguayan guaiac, Virginian cedar, Indonesian patchouli and Indian cypriol. The result reads as black wood without a single drop of black wood, which is precisely the point of the house's founding conceit. This review examines Bois d'Ébène in full: its pyramid and the additional supporting notes listed by the house, the way the composition evolves across eight-plus hours of wear, its performance envelope, its place among its peers, and the question every prospective buyer eventually asks of a €170 to €250 bottle of eau de parfum — whether the idea justifies the outlay.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes are the most aromatic and the most deceptive phase of the fragrance. Juniper berries deliver a cold, gin-like coniferous brightness, sharpened by the green-camphoraceous lift of cardamom and the rooty, faintly musky herbalism of angelica. For a moment Bois d'Ébène reads almost like a dry aromatic fougère, cool and upright — a false dawn before the woods move in.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between roughly one and two hours the guaiac wood takes control. Its characteristic smoky, tea-like, slightly sweet timber note arrives with a lactonic softness beneath it — a creamy, almost sandalwood-adjacent milkiness that keeps the smoke from turning acrid. The composition broadens considerably here: what was vertical becomes horizontal, and the first hints of patchouli and cypriol begin to surface from below.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From around the fourth hour onward the fragrance reaches its true destination: a dark, dense, earthy wood accord in which patchouli's camphoraceous earthiness is bound to cypriol's leathery, smoky, almost tar-like rootiness, cushioned by cabreuva's soft balsamic sweetness and dried by cedar. The drydown is remarkably stable and linear in the best sense — it does not so much develop as deepen, holding its dark woody-amber signature for the remainder of the wear.

Performance Dashboard

⏱️ Longevity 4.0/5

Long lasting, comfortably 8+ hours on skin, with the base accord persisting well into the following morning on fabric.

📢 Projection 3.0/5

Moderate; roughly an arm's length for the first two to three hours before settling into a skin-close hum.

💨 Sillage 3.0/5

Moderate — a discernible but restrained scent trail that sits close to the body rather than filling a room.

Pros & Cons

  • ✅ A genuinely original dark wood accord that avoids both the sweet-amber cliché and the literal oud cliché
  • ✅ Excellent longevity of 8+ hours with a stable, non-fatiguing drydown
  • ✅ Refined and office-appropriate despite its density, thanks to moderate sillage
  • ✅ Unisex in the truest sense — the aromatic opening and creamy mid-section balance the earthy base
  • ❌ Premium pricing at roughly €170–€250 for 100 ml, with no smaller format widely available
  • ❌ Moderate projection will disappoint wearers who equate niche with loudness
  • ❌ The earthy patchouli-cypriol base is a genuine dividing line — those who dislike patchouli will not be converted
  • ❌ The aromatic opening can read sharp or austere to wearers expecting immediate warmth

Price & Value

€170–€250 (100 ml EDP)
Positioned at the upper end of independent French niche, in line with the house's material-overdose positioning and its use of high-quality naturals such as cabreuva and cypriol.

“Fair for what it is, demanding for what it does. Bois d'Ébène is not a volume purchase — it is a considered signature. Buyers who value construction and material quality over projection will find the value defensible; those shopping for maximum impact per euro should look elsewhere.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As with most Matière Première releases, the formula has remained stable since its 2019 launch, with only normal natural-harvest variation in the cabreuva and cypriol extracts.

Final Verdict

Bois d'Ébène is one of the most intelligently constructed dark woody fragrances of its generation, and a near-perfect statement of the Matière Première thesis: take one material, dose it without apology, and let everything else serve it. It will not please wearers who want sweetness, volume or a literal ebony note, but for those who value texture, restraint and a drydown that deepens rather than decays, it is close to essential.
