Scent Journey
The first thirty minutes are genuinely effervescent. Champagne gives a lifted, slightly aldehydic sparkle; davana adds an apricot-and-herb sweetness that reads almost liqueur-like; red currant supplies a tart, juicy edge that keeps the whole thing from turning syrupy. It is bright, a little sharp, and unmistakably festive — the olfactory equivalent of a cork popping in a room where something important is about to be discussed.
Around the one-to-two-hour mark the rose quartet takes the wheel. Bulgarian rose brings a rich, honeyed, almost waxy depth; May rose is lighter and more transparent; Rosa centifolia gives the jammy, rounded, old-fashioned rose-petal quality that makes the composition feel plush. Magnolia threads a creamy, faintly lemon-tinged floral note through the middle, softening the transition. The champagne fizz fades but never fully disappears — it becomes a shimmer over the rose rather than a separate layer.
From roughly the four-hour mark onward, Checkmate settles into its base. Bourbon tobacco is the headline: sweet, hay-like, faintly boozy, with a warmth that reads more like cured leaf than cigarette smoke. Tree moss and patchouli give it an earthy, slightly bitter, forest-floor grounding that pulls the composition away from dessert territory and toward something more classic. The rose survives into the drydown in a dried, jammy, almost potpourri form, so the fragrance never fully abandons its floral identity. Expect the base to sit close and warm for hours.
Performance Dashboard
8+ hours on skin, and noticeably longer on fabric. As an extrait de parfum, this is exactly the endurance you are paying for.
Moderate to strong for the first two to three hours, then it settles into an arm's-length-and-closer aura.
Moderate to strong — it leaves a clear trail without filling a room. One or two sprays is genuinely sufficient.
When to Wear
Pros & Cons
- ✅ Genuine extrait performance — 8+ hours with a real drydown arc
- ✅ An unusually layered rose: three distinct rose materials plus magnolia
- ✅ The champagne-and-davana opening is distinctive and memorable
- ✅ Tobacco, moss and patchouli base gives it weight without turning muddy
- ✅ Truly unisex — it flatters rather than assigns
- ✅ Strong cold-weather and evening versatility
- ❌ The opening can read sharp or overly sparkling to some noses
- ❌ The mossy, earthy base is a dealbreaker for patchouli sceptics
- ❌ Too heavy for summer and for most offices
- ❌ At $300-$400 for 100ml, it is a genuine investment
- ❌ The rose-tobacco genre is crowded — it is not the first of its kind
Price & Value
“Fair, if not a bargain. You are paying for concentration, longevity and a genuinely complex composition rather than for packaging alone. But because the genre is competitive, sample first — if you already own a rose-patchouli powerhouse, Checkmate may be a luxury rather than a necessity.”

Layering Ideas
- Layer with a plain vanilla or amber extrait to round off the mossy bitterness in the base — one spray of each, applied to the same pulse point.
- Layer with a dry woody-amber to stretch the drydown further into the evening without adding sweetness.
- Do not layer with another rose fragrance — the triple-rose heart is already dense and will turn muddy.
- In spring, apply a single spray to the chest rather than the neck to reduce projection and let the magnolia breathe.
- On fabric, Checkmate lasts considerably longer than on skin — a light mist on a scarf or coat collar is an effective way to extend the tobacco drydown.
