Penhaligon's Fragrance review

Penhaligon's Vra Vra Vroom Review: Fruity Leather Whirl

A honeyed osmanthus whirlwind wrapped in suede — bright, playful, quietly addictive.

By Vivir · · Updated
There is something gloriously mischievous about a Penhaligon's release that names itself after the sound of an engine revving. Vra Vra Vroom, launched in 2023 as part of the house's Potions & Remedies collection, arrives with its collar turned up and its foot on the pedal — a fruity-floral leather that announces itself with a grin rather than a bow. Where so much of the Penhaligon's oeuvre leans into heritage and restraint, this one is unapologetically alive: a vitality vapour, as the house itself describes it, infused with osmanthus and finished in soft suede. The architect is Quentin Bisch, and the brief suits him perfectly. Bisch is a perfumer who understands that brightness needs a shadow to feel three-dimensional, and here he sets a shimmering apricot-and-citrus overture against a base of Georgywood®, Ambrofix, and leather. The result is a scent that reads simultaneously fresh and warm, edible and animalic-adjacent, playful and quietly sophisticated. It is the olfactory equivalent of a silk shirt worn open at the collar — polished, but with a pulse beneath it. On paper, the accord list — fruity, floral, leathery, fresh, sweet — sounds like a crowded room. In practice, Vra Vra Vroom is a study in balance. The apricot is jammy but never cloying; the osmanthus is honeyed but lifted by clary sage; the leather is suede-soft rather than equestrian. It is a fragrance that flirts rather than shouts, and that is precisely its charm. What follows is a full, unhurried appraisal of a scent that may divide the room on value but rarely fails to intrigue the nose.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes are a burst of ripe, sun-warmed fruit: apricot at its most velvet-skinned, sharpened by a squeeze of mandarin and bergamot. Clary sage threads through the sweetness with a herbal, almost tea-like greenness, keeping the opening from tipping into dessert. It is bright, juicy, and immediately likeable — a smile of a start.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

As the citrus recedes, the heart blooms into honeyed osmanthus — that peculiar flower that smells of apricot leather and tea — supported by creamy magnolia and a whisper of rose. This is the fragrance's most persuasive hour: plush, golden, and gently narcotic, with the fruit and flower blurring into a single luminous ribbon.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

Four hours in, the composition settles into its suede. Georgywood® and Ambrofix provide a smooth, woody-ambery cradle — clean, slightly synthetic in the modern manner — while the leather note reads as soft glove-suede rather than saddle. The finish is fresher and lighter than the opening suggests, fading to a skin-close warmth that invites a second spray.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 3.5/5

Roughly six hours on skin — moderate, with Parfumo users scoring it 7.0/10. Expect a soft halo well into the afternoon, though not a full-day companion.

Projection 3.0/5

Noticeable up close but soft in the air; the drydown turns fresher and slightly synthetic, projecting to roughly arm's length before settling.

Sillage 3.4/5

Moderate; Parfumo sillage sits at 6.7/10. It leaves a pleasant trail in the first two hours before drawing close to the body.

Final Verdict

Vra Vra Vroom is a deliciously wearable contradiction — a fruity-floral that dresses in suede and drives with the top down. Quentin Bisch has crafted something genuinely charming, and if you can forgive moderate performance at a luxury price, it rewards with one of the most likeable openings in recent Penhaligon's memory.
