Rabanne Phantom in Red Review: A Darker, Spicier Phantom

Saffron, plum liquor and oud reframe the Phantom signature for the cold months

By Vivir ·
Since its 2021 debut, Rabanne's Phantom has been the house's most cheerfully contradictory creation: a fragrance that presents a smiling matte-blue robot on the shelf while delivering a surprisingly polished lavender-and-vanilla signature underneath. It was built for the bright register — an aromatic fougère dressed in modern amber, engineered to be likeable from the first spray. Phantom in Red, released in 2025, is the moment that formula is asked to grow up. This is not a subtle re-tint. Phantom in Red replaces the original's cool, mint-tinged opening with plum liquor, saffron and bergamot, threads the heart with lavender, sage and orange blossom, and lands on a base of amberwood, benzoin, oud and tobacco. The result is an Oriental Woody eau de parfum — warmer, denser and considerably more nocturnal than anything the Phantom line has previously offered. It is, in effect, the Phantom you wear after dark. Composed by Anne Flipo, Juliette Karagueuzoglou and Nicolas Beaulieu, Phantom in Red reads as a deliberate act of repositioning. Below, we examine its architecture note by note, trace its evolution across the wearing, and assess where it sits within both the Phantom family and the wider landscape of contemporary amber-spice masculines.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first fifteen minutes are dominated by plum liquor and saffron — a boozy, liqueur-soaked stone fruit cut through by a dry, leathery, faintly metallic saffron. Bergamot supplies a brief citrus lift that keeps the opening from reading as heavy. The overall impression is warm, spiced and immediately distinctive; there is nothing in the original Phantom that prepares you for it.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Roughly one to two hours in, lavender and clary sage take over, pulling the fragrance into a distinctly aromatic, herbal register. The fruit recedes to a shadow behind the herbs. Orange blossom adds a faint honeyed luminosity that softens the transition. This is the most classically 'Phantom' phase of the wearing, but rendered darker and more savoury than the 2021 original.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From roughly the four-hour mark onward, amberwood, benzoin, oud and tobacco dominate. The base is resinous, smoked and enveloping, with benzoin's balsamic sweetness tempering the dry amberwood scratch. The oud accord reads smooth and leathery rather than animalic, and the tobacco is sweet dried leaf rather than ash. A faint plum-and-saffron trace persists underneath for several hours.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

6–8 hours on skin, with the resinous base lingering noticeably longer on fabric. Above average for a modern designer EDP, though not a true beast-mode performer.

Projection 3.5/5

Moderate to strong, described by the community as a strong cold-weather performer. Two to four sprays is ample; the density of the base rewards restraint.

Sillage 3.5/5

Moderate to strong. It leaves a clearly detectable trail in the first three hours before settling into a closer, warmer aura.

Pros & Cons

  • Distinctive plum-liquor and saffron opening that separates it from the rest of the Phantom line
  • Solid six-to-eight-hour longevity with a genuinely enveloping resinous base
  • Accessible designer pricing for an oud-and-tobacco composition
  • Strong cold-weather performance with excellent value per millilitre
  • The saffron-and-plum opening may read as overly sweet or syrupy to some
  • The oud accord is smooth and designer-friendly rather than authentically animalic
  • Less versatile than the original Phantom — it is firmly a cool-weather, after-dark fragrance
  • Crowded competitive space: it invites direct comparison with several stronger elixirs

Price & Value

$68–$130
At the lower end of the range it is excellent value; at full retail for 100ml it is competitive but not exceptional given the density of the elixir category it competes in.

“Fair to good. Buyers who wait for discounter pricing will find Phantom in Red one of the better value propositions in the 2025 designer amber-spice segment.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As a 2025 release, the fragrance is still within its first production cycles and no reformulation concerns have been documented by the community.

Who It's For

Ideal For

  • Men who find the original Phantom too bright or too youthful
  • Wearers of sweet-spicy ambers such as Le Male Elixir and Invictus Elixir
  • Anyone seeking a designer oud-tobacco accord without niche pricing
  • Evening and cold-weather wearers who want warmth without full gourmand sugar

Not Recommended For

  • Purists who want a genuine animalic or barnyard oud
  • Wearers who prefer crisp, citrus-forward freshies
  • Those who dislike saffron's leathery, slightly medicinal edge
  • Hot, humid climates and high-summer daytime use

Final Verdict

Phantom in Red is the most interesting thing to happen to the Phantom line since its debut. By swapping the original's bright lavender-vanilla optimism for plum liquor, saffron, oud and tobacco, Rabanne has produced a genuinely autumnal, after-dark masculine that stands on its own rather than merely echoing its siblings. It is not a revolutionary fragrance, and it competes in a crowded field of sweet-spicy elixirs, but at its street price it is one of the more convincing designer oud-and-tobacco propositions of 2025.
