Swiss Arabian Secret Frankincense CPO Review (2023)

A 12ml concentrated perfume oil where Dhofari olibanum meets saffron, oud and amber.

By Vivir ·
Frankincense is the most philosophically awkward material in perfumery. It is a resin, not a flower; a smoke, not a sweetness; the scent of temples, funerals and trade routes rather than of skin. To build a fragrance around it is to accept that the result will always carry a certain liturgical gravity — and to accept, too, that the material behaves in a way that frustrates conventional pyramid thinking, because olibanum is simultaneously a bright, terpenic top note and a dense, resinous base. Swiss Arabian's Secret Frankincense, released in 2023 as a 12ml concentrated perfume oil (CPO), tackles that problem head-on. Rather than hiding the frankincense inside a conventional accord structure, the house threads it through all three tiers of the pyramid — top, heart and base — so that the resin functions less as an ingredient than as a spine. Around it, the perfumers have built the two axes one expects from a modern Gulf composition: a warm, saffron-and-leather spice road on one side, and a powdery rose-violet-jasmine florality on the other, both settling onto an amber-oud-patchouli-musk foundation. What emerges is not a church incense pastiche, and it is not quite a western oud either. It is a Gulf mukhalat logic applied to a single, historically loaded material — presented in the most concentrated and least forgiving format the industry offers. At a Fragrantica community score of 4.57 out of 5, and at a price that hovers between twenty-five and forty US dollars for the 12ml bottle, it is also one of the more interesting value propositions in the current Middle Eastern market.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes are dominated by the cool, almost citrus-peel brightness of olibanum, sharpened by a lavender note that reads more aromatic-herbal than barbershop. Rose and jasmine are present but subordinate, giving a soft, slightly soapy lift rather than a full florality. Because the formula is a perfume oil, this phase is not a brief fanfare — it settles slowly, warming on the skin rather than evaporating from it.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between roughly one and two hours the spice road opens: saffron's dry, almost metallic leatheriness, nutmeg's dusty warmth, and a violet note that pulls the composition toward the powdery register named in its accord profile. The frankincense has by now lost its citrus edge and turned balsamic-resinous, and the leather accord begins to read as a texture rather than a smell — suede rather than saddle.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From four hours onward the fragrance becomes an amber-oud composition with a frankincense halo. Agarwood is present but restrained by Gulf-market standards — more a dry, slightly medicinal woodiness than an animalic barnyard oud. Patchouli supplies an earthy, camphoraceous floor, musk softens the edges, and the resinous frankincense note persists to the very end, which in a CPO means well beyond the twelve-hour mark on skin and considerably longer on fabric.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 5.0/5

10-12+ hours on skin as a concentrated perfume oil; the resinous base can remain detectable on textiles for days.

Projection 4.0/5

Strong for an oil. Reviewers consistently advise a single swipe or two at most, applied to pulse points.

Sillage 4.0/5

Moderate to strong. This is a dense, close-wearing scent cloud that trails behind the wearer rather than filling a room.

Pros & Cons

  • Exceptional longevity and projection for the price, courtesy of the CPO format
  • Genuine, recognisable frankincense threaded through the entire pyramid rather than used as a garnish
  • Sub-$40 entry point into a style of perfumery that usually costs several times as much
  • Unisex in the truest sense — the powdery florals and the resinous woods are evenly balanced
  • The oil format is unforgiving: over-application is easy and unpleasant
  • Frankincense, oud and leather together make for a demanding, sometimes austere wear
  • Not office-safe or summer-appropriate for most wearers
  • No credited perfumer and limited published compositional detail

Price & Value

$25-$40 (12ml CPO)
The official Oman store lists OMR 11.00 for the 12ml concentrated perfume oil; USD figures are a rough conversion and typical grey-market range. Either way, the cost-per-wear is extremely low given 10-12+ hour longevity.

“Outstanding value. Very few fragrances at this price deliver a resinous, oud-accented composition with this level of tenacity without collapsing into synthetic harshness.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As a 2023 release in concentrated oil form, the formula is relatively recent and the CPO format is generally more consistent across batches than alcohol-based extraits, since the oil base itself acts as a stabiliser.

Final Verdict

Secret Frankincense is not a beginner's incense. It is a structural argument — that olibanum can be a spine rather than a garnish — executed in the most concentrated format available and sold at a price that makes the argument almost risk-free. For anyone who already loves resinous, oud-accented perfumery, it is one of the more rewarding sub-$40 purchases of recent years; for anyone who does not, one swipe will settle the question immediately.
