Trussardi Sound of Donna Review: A Sweet Almond Gourmand

Whipped cream, chestnut and tuberose — Trussardi's 2018 gourmand is a dessert with teeth.

Every few years the fragrance world collectively rediscovers a texture. In the mid-2010s it was salt. Before that, oud. And in 2018, when Trussardi released Sound of Donna, the texture everyone was quietly chasing was cream — whipped, sweet, faintly nutty, the kind of scent that makes someone lean in and ask what you're wearing before they have finished saying hello. Sound of Donna landed at an interesting moment for the Italian house. Trussardi had already proved it could do a modern gourmand with the 2011 relaunch of Donna, a fragrance that became a slow-burning cult favourite. Sound of Donna took that DNA somewhere warmer and more edible: green almond and mandarin up top, a full floral heart of heliotrope, tuberose and rose, and a base built on whipped cream, chestnut, patchouli and sandalwood. It is a dessert with structure — sweet, but never shapeless. What makes it worth revisiting now is how neatly it fits the current mood. We are living through a soft-gourmand revival: vanilla-forward, skin-close, deliberately unaggressive fragrances that read as comfort rather than statement. Sound of Donna was doing that before it became a trend. It is also, at $37–$90 for a 100ml bottle, one of the better-value entries in the category — a designer gourmand with niche ambition and a price tag that does not punish you for being curious.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first spray is the loudest moment of the whole wear. Green almond arrives with a slightly bitter, marzipan-adjacent edge, sharpened by a squeeze of mandarin and softened by magnolia's creamy petals. For roughly the first half hour this reads bright, nutty and almost confectionery — the part of the fragrance that gets noticed across a room.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between one and two hours the florals take over the steering wheel. Heliotrope brings its signature powdery, almond-vanilla aura, which dovetails neatly with the almond that opened the scent. Tuberose adds a fleshy, slightly bubblegum creaminess, and rose lifts the whole thing so it never turns syrupy. This is the most 'perfume-y' phase and the most recognisably designer.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From roughly the four-hour mark onward, Sound of Donna settles into skin. Whipped cream and chestnut give a soft, lactonic, faintly roasted sweetness, while patchouli and sandalwood provide an earthy, creamy floor that keeps the dessert from collapsing into pure sugar. The finish is powdery, warm and close — a personal scent rather than a performance.

Pros & Cons

  • Distinctive green almond opening that separates it from generic vanilla gourmands
  • Floral heart gives the sweetness real structure instead of flat sugar
  • Patchouli and sandalwood drydown keeps it wearable into the evening
  • Excellent value at $37–$90 for 100ml
  • Versatile enough for office and everyday wear, not just date night
  • Longevity is modest at 4-6 hours — expect to reapply for a full day
  • Projection fades quickly after the opening, which may disappoint performance chasers
  • The lactonic cream and chestnut can feel heavy in warm weather
  • Tuberose and heliotrope are polarising for some noses

Price & Value

$37-$90
100ml of EDP for under $100 puts Sound of Donna well below most designer gourmands in its weight class, and comfortably below niche equivalents.

“Strong value. The composition punches above its price point even if the performance is merely average — you are paying for the idea, not the projection.”

Final Verdict

Trussardi Sound of Donna is the rare designer gourmand that understands restraint. It opens loud and edible, then quietly hands the reins to tuberose, heliotrope and a creamy patchouli-sandalwood base that keeps it wearable long after the dessert course. It will not win any longevity contests, but at this price it does not need to — this is one of the smartest sweet-fragrance buys in the mainstream market.
