Valentino Punk Romantic Review: Vanilla & Olive Wood

Valentino's Punk Romantic is a fragrance built on a paradox. It is a vanilla scent that refuses to be merely sweet, a woody composition that never turns arid, and a unisex parfum that wears its couture pedigree lightly. Released in 2024 as part of the seven-fragrance Anatomy of Dreams collection, it represents one of the more intellectually ambitious entries in the contemporary designer landscape. Where much of the modern vanilla-wood category settles for comfortable sweetness, Punk Romantic insists on friction. The black pepper opening is deliberately abrasive; the olive wood accord is green, bitter, and mineral; the juniper adds a gin-like aromatic austerity. Only in the drydown do the vanillas — Bourbon and Madagascar — fully assert themselves, and even then they are disciplined by sandalwood and musk. The result is a fragrance that rewards attention. It is not an easy wear, but it is a memorable one, and it demonstrates that the designer parfum category still has room for genuine compositional ambition.
