Zoologist Olm Review: The Scent of a Subterranean Cave

Zoologist's blind cave salamander becomes a mineral, musky aquatic

By Vivir ·
Every so often a fragrance arrives that makes you stop mid-spritz and ask what, exactly, you are smelling. Zoologist Perfumes Olm is one of those. It opens wet and mineral, like the air that rushes out of a cave mouth on a hot afternoon — cold, faintly sulfurous, unmistakably alive. Then it softens into something stranger and more intimate: skin-warm musk, a whisper of algae, sandalwood worn smooth by running water. It is, quite literally, a landscape in a bottle. Zoologist has spent more than a decade assembling a small olfactory zoo — Beaver, Bat, Squid, Moth, Snowy Owl, Bee, T-Rex, Sacred Scarab — each release an argument that an animal can be translated into scent without reaching for the obvious. Olm, released in 2025 and composed by Spyros Drosopoulos, may be the house's most conceptually ambitious entry yet. The olm is not a charismatic megafauna. It is a blind, translucent, cave-dwelling salamander that most people have never heard of, living in a place the human eye was never designed to see. That is the challenge, and that is the pleasure. Olm does not smell like an animal. It smells like the animal's world — and that world turns out to be one of the most transporting places niche perfumery has visited in years.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

A cold, wet mineral blast: limestone, cave water and a distinct iodine edge that reads almost saline-medicinal for the first ten to fifteen minutes. It is bracing, slightly austere, and completely unlike a conventional 'fresh aquatic.'

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

The stone softens and something organic creeps in. Algae and water notes give the composition a damp, green-grey texture, while Iso E Super adds a smooth, almost velvety woody radiance that keeps the fragrance from smelling like a swimming pool.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

Four hours in, Olm turns warm and second-skin. Soft amber, sandalwood, oily musks and Cashmeran knit together into a powdery, slightly sweet, deeply comforting base that sits close to the body and lasts for hours.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

Long-lasting — 8+ hours on skin, and considerably longer on fabric.

Projection 3.0/5

Projects quite far from the wearer but stays relatively unobtrusive to those nearby.

Sillage 3.0/5

Moderate to strong; it fills a room gently rather than announcing itself.

Pros & Cons

  • Genuinely original concept, executed with restraint rather than gimmickry
  • 16% extrait concentration delivers 8+ hours of wear
  • The mineral-cave opening is unlike anything else on the market
  • Truly unisex — it reads as neither masculine nor feminine
  • Excellent cold-weather and rainy-day companion
  • The iodine and algae notes are polarizing and can read medicinal at first
  • Not a warm-weather fragrance; it can feel heavy in high heat
  • $200 for 60 ml is a real commitment for a blind buy
  • Limited distribution means sampling takes deliberate effort
  • The drydown is far more conventional than the opening, which may disappoint thrill-seekers

Price & Value

$200 (60 ml Extrait de Parfum)
At $200 for 60 ml of a 16% extrait, Olm sits squarely in the middle of the niche market — cheaper per millilitre than most designer exclusives, pricier than many small indie houses.

“Fair value for what it is: a long-lasting, genuinely unusual extrait from a house with a cult following. Sample first, but if it clicks, it earns its price.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As with all Zoologist releases, early-production bottles and later restocks are blended to the same 16% extrait specification, and the house has not announced any reformulation.

Final Verdict

Olm is the rare conceptual fragrance that survives contact with skin. Its cold, iodine-tinged limestone opening is genuinely strange, and its amber-musk drydown is genuinely wearable — a combination that few houses manage. It is not for everyone, and it is not for summer, but for anyone who has ever wanted to smell like a place rather than a person, it is one of 2025's most interesting releases.
