By Kilian Black Phantom Memento Mori Anniversary Edition

Rum, dark chocolate and coffee — Kilian's darkest gourmand gets a 15th-anniversary crown.

By Vivir ·
Every so often a fragrance arrives that feels less like a perfume and more like a scene. By Kilian's Black Phantom Memento Mori has been that scene since 2017: a pirate ship's hold, a candlelit cellar, a glass of dark rum pressed into your hand while something sweet and bitter smoulders in the corner. In 2022, to mark fifteen years of the house, Kilian Hennessy's label reframed that scene in the Black Phantom Memento Mori Anniversary Edition — a limited release that keeps the original's DNA intact while dressing it for a collector's shelf. The timing was not accidental. The 2020s have been the decade of the dark gourmand: rum, coffee, cacao, burnt sugar and resins have migrated from the niche corner into the mainstream, and Black Phantom is one of the fragrances that built that bridge. It arrived before the trend crested, which is why it still reads as a reference point rather than a follower. Where many contemporary sweet fragrances chase brightness and mass appeal, this one leans deliberately into shadow — bitter cacao, roasted coffee, a boozy top that evaporates like the first sip of a spirit. The Anniversary Edition is, at its core, the same composition by perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur, presented as a 50ml Eau de Parfum with a special decorated bottle. It is unisex in the truest sense of the word: there is nothing gendered about rum, chocolate and vetiver. What it asks of the wearer is simply a tolerance for richness and a willingness to be noticed. This is not a scent you put on absent-mindedly before a supermarket run. It is a scent you choose.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes are the booziest and most assertive phase. Martinique rum arrives warm and slightly sharp, lifted by dark chocolate that reads bitter rather than milky — closer to a 70% cacao bar than a truffle. There is a faint alcohol sting at the very top that gives the opening a cocktail-hour energy before it settles.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between one and two hours the composition pivots from drink to dessert. Coffee and almond take the lead, roasted and nutty rather than creamy, while caramel and sugar soften the edges. This is the heart that gives Black Phantom its reputation: rich, edible, faintly smoky, with the chocolate now woven through rather than sitting on top.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From roughly the fourth hour onward the gourmand elements recede and the base takes over. Vetiver brings an earthy, slightly green dryness that cuts the sugar, sandalwood adds creamy wood, and heliotrope delivers the powdery, almond-like softness that lingers longest. The final hours are quiet, skin-close and unexpectedly elegant — the ghost in the name.

Performance Dashboard

6-8 hours on skin, with the base notes detectable well into hour eight on clothing.

Projection 3.0/5

Noticeable for roughly the first three hours, then it settles closer to the body.

Sillage 4.0/5

Moderate to strong — it fills a room without shouting, and leaves a clear trail when you move.

Pros & Cons

  • A genuinely distinctive dark gourmand — rum, bitter cacao and coffee in a single coherent arc
  • Vetiver and sandalwood in the base keep the sweetness from becoming cloying
  • Strong cold-weather performance with 6-8 hours of longevity
  • Truly unisex composition with no gendered marketing baggage
  • Limited-edition presentation makes it a credible collector's piece
  • Heavy and sweet — unwearable in high heat or humid climates
  • Limited availability means inflated secondary-market pricing
  • The boozy opening can read as sharp to anyone who dislikes rum accords
  • Not office-friendly for most workplaces

Price & Value

$185
At $185 for a 50ml Eau de Parfum, the Anniversary Edition sits at the upper end of the niche mainstream — comparable to other By Kilian releases and roughly in line with prestige gourmands from Tom Ford, Xerjoff and Parfums de Marly.

“Fair for what it is, provided you actually wear it. The concentration is solid, longevity is above average, and the composition is distinctive enough to justify the outlay. As a limited edition, however, resale prices can climb quickly — buy it to use it, not to flip it.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As a limited-edition anniversary run, the Anniversary Edition was produced in a single controlled batch, so consistency between bottles is generally regarded as high. Any perceived differences between this and the 2017 original are more likely attributable to maceration time and storage than to reformulation.

Final Verdict

Black Phantom Memento Mori Anniversary Edition is a rare thing: a limited-edition release that earns its existence rather than coasting on packaging. Sidonie Lancesseur's composition is a genuine reference point for the modern dark gourmand, moving from boozy rum and bitter cacao through roasted coffee and caramel into a vetiver-sandalwood-helitrope base that is far more refined than the notes list suggests. If you wear heavy, sweet, cold-weather fragrances and you want one that still feels like a choice rather than a default, this belongs on your shelf.
