Byredo Cuir Sellier 2025 Review: Leather, Reforged

Byredo's leather extrait returns darker, smokier and more leather-forward

By Vivir ·
Byredo has never been shy about revisiting its own archive, but the 2025 relaunch of Cuir Sellier is closer to a rewrite than a reissue. The original Sellier arrived in 2016 as a softer, suede-adjacent leather built around black tea and cashmeran. The 2025 Cuir Sellier — released inside the house's Night Veils extrait de parfum collection and composed once again by Jérôme Epinette with Robertet — takes that same skeleton and pushes the leather accord to the front of the composition, then keeps it there for the better part of a day. The result reads unmistakably as leather from the first spray to the final drydown, with a smoky, birch-driven backbone and a mossy, almost chypre-like finish. It is unisex on paper and in practice, though it leans toward wearers who are at ease with animalic, tar-adjacent materials. At roughly $300 to $460 for a 70ml bottle, it is also one of the more expensive propositions in Byredo's lineup. This review covers the 2025 extrait de parfum specifically, and flags where it diverges from the 2016 original. It is sold in a single concentration and a single size, which makes the buying decision unusually simple — and unusually expensive.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first spray is darker and more direct than the 2016 Sellier. Cashmeran arrives as a smooth, almost powdery woody blanket, and the leather is already present — not waiting in the background as it did in the original, but sitting up front with a dry, faintly chemical sharpness. Black tea contributes a bitter, tannic edge that reads as unsweetened and slightly austere. Within ten minutes the tobacco begins to surface, softening the leather's harder angles with a warm, dried-leaf sweetness. There is a distinctly synthetic quality in this phase, and it is worth naming honestly: this does not smell like a tannery, it smells like a very good modern reconstruction of one.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Once the opening settles, Cuir Sellier becomes a genuine leather-tobacco composition. The leather accord and the tobacco leaves lock together into something dry, smoky and slightly sweet — the closest the fragrance comes to warmth. Birch tar begins to show through here, adding a tarry, almost rubbery smoke that gives the heart its weight. This is the most wearable stretch of the wear, and the point at which the fragrance reads as clearly unisex. It is not floral, not fruity, not sweet — it is a leather jacket, a fireplace, and a cup of tea that has gone cold.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

The base is where Cuir Sellier separates itself from most of its competition. Oakmoss takes over the lower register, giving the leather a mossy, bitter, almost vintage-chypre finish. The smoke persists but flattens into something drier and quieter, and the cashmeran returns as a soft, skin-close musk that keeps the whole thing from turning harsh. At hour six and beyond, what remains on skin is a smoky, mossy leather with a faint woody sweetness — subtle enough for an office, distinct enough that anyone standing close will notice.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

8-10 hours on skin as an extrait de parfum, with the base clinging to fabric well beyond that. On clothing, the leather and oakmoss remain detectable the following day.

Projection 4.0/5

Strong and enveloping. Two to three sprays is genuinely enough; four or more will fill a small room.

Sillage 4.0/5

Strong. This is not a skin scent — it leaves a clear trail for the first three to four hours.

Pros & Cons

  • Genuine extrait performance — 8-10 hours of longevity with strong projection
  • A distinctive, leather-first profile that does not blur into generic woody-amber territory
  • Truly unisex, and wearable across evening, formal and office settings
  • An oakmoss base gives the drydown unusual depth and a vintage-adjacent finish
  • Polarizing — the synthetic leather materials will read as harsh to some noses
  • Expensive, with no known dupe alternatives
  • Difficult to wear in warm weather or in close quarters
  • The 2025 reformulation differs noticeably from the 2016 original, which will disappoint some longtime fans

Price & Value

$300-$460
A 70ml extrait de parfum at luxury pricing. The concentration justifies part of the cost, since you need fewer sprays and the bottle lasts longer than an equivalent eau de toilette.

“Buy it because you want this specific leather, not because it represents good value per milliliter. There is no cheaper route to the same scent profile.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations have been reported for the 2025 release. The important caveat is not batch-to-batch inconsistency but reformulation: the 2025 Cuir Sellier is a distinctly leather-forward rewrite of the 2016 original Sellier, with the leather accord significantly amplified. Buyers expecting a straight restock of the 2016 scent should sample first.

Not Recommended For

  • Wearers who dislike birch tar, isobutyl quinoline or synthetic leather materials
  • Anyone seeking a soft, approachable everyday signature scent
  • People who work in scent-restricted or confined environments
  • Buyers on a budget, since this is a premium-priced extrait with no widely available dupe

Final Verdict

Byredo Cuir Sellier 2025 is a confident, uncompromising leather extrait that knows exactly what it wants to be. It is louder and more leather-forward than the 2016 original, built on a synthetic leather accord and anchored by birch tar and oakmoss, and it performs like a true extrait from the first spray to the last. It is not for everyone — the price is steep, the opening is sharp, and the synthetic facets are impossible to ignore — but for wearers who want a serious cold-weather leather with real projection, it earns its place.
