Imaginary Authors Dipped in Chocolate Review 2024

Salt and Straw's chocolate waffle cone, bottled as wearable dessert.

By Vivir · · Updated
Imaginary Authors has never been a house that plays it safe. Founded in Portland, Oregon by perfumer Josh Meyer, the brand builds every fragrance around a fictional book — a story you are invited to read on skin. Dipped in Chocolate, released in 2024 as a limited edition, is the house's second collaboration with Portland ice cream institution Salt and Straw, and it reads like the sequel to a beloved first chapter: A Whiff of Waffle Cone, now plunged headfirst into dark chocolate. Where its predecessor was airy, lactonic and almost innocent — a scoop shop on a summer afternoon — Dipped in Chocolate is what happens after the sun goes down. The chocolate here is not a candy bar; it is cocoa with bite, dusted with green cardamom, folded into vanilla cream and set on a base of creamy sandalwood and Sumatran benzoin. It is warm, spiced, subtly powdery and unmistakably gourmand — yet it never collapses into pure sugar. There is structure beneath the sweetness, and that structure is what separates it from the avalanche of dessert-adjacent releases crowding the niche market. This is a fragrance for people who want to smell delicious without smelling like a dessert menu. It is unisex by design, priced at $115 for a 50ml Eau de Parfum, and — being a limited edition — it exists in the peculiar limbo that all great indie releases eventually enter: beloved, discussed and increasingly difficult to find. If you can still get your hands on a bottle, the reward is one of the most complete chocolate compositions released this decade.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first thirty minutes are all cocoa and cardamom. The chocolate arrives dark and slightly bitter — think 70 percent bar, not syrup — and the cardamom sits on top of it like a green, almost eucalyptus-cool whisper. It is a curious, brilliant tension: the sweetness wants to bloom, and the spice keeps pressing it back down. There is a faintly dusty, powdery quality from the very start, which reads as cocoa powder rather than baby powder.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

Between one and two hours, the composition softens into its heart. Vanilla cream steps forward and rounds off the chocolate's edges, and the waffle cone note appears — toasted, faintly buttery, with a whisper of salt that keeps the gourmand accord from tipping into cloying. The cardamom recedes but never disappears, and the overall effect is of a warm, freshly dipped cone held in a cool room. This is the most overtly edible phase of the wear.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From roughly four hours onward, the fragrance becomes something else entirely. The dessert recedes and the base takes over: creamy sandalwood, smooth and slightly lactonic, wrapped in Sumatran benzoin's resinous, vanilla-adjacent warmth. What remains is a soft, powdery, ambered skin scent with a ghost of cocoa — intimate, comforting and far more sophisticated than the opening would have suggested. It lingers close to the body for hours.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

Six to eight hours on skin, with the resinous benzoin and sandalwood base extending the final phase well beyond the point where the chocolate has faded.

Projection 3.5/5

Moderate to strong. Three to four sprays are widely reported as potent, so restraint is advised — two or three is plenty for an evening.

Sillage 3.5/5

Moderate to strong. It fills a room without shouting, and it leaves a detectable trail when you move.

Pros & Cons

  • A genuinely complex chocolate accord — bitter, spiced and powdery rather than syrupy
  • Excellent transition from edible opening to a refined sandalwood-benzoin drydown
  • Strong performance for a gourmand, with six to eight hours of wear
  • Unisex composition that never leans juvenile or candy-like
  • Limited edition availability makes it difficult and sometimes expensive to source
  • The cardamom-heavy opening can read sharp to those expecting pure dessert
  • Not versatile — it is firmly a cold-weather, evening fragrance
  • No known clone alternatives exist, so there is no budget route in

Price & Value

$115
At $115 for 50ml of Eau de Parfum, Dipped in Chocolate sits at the accessible end of the niche spectrum, and the performance justifies the outlay comfortably.

“Fair to good value. You are paying for a limited-edition indie composition with above-average longevity, not for a designer name — and on those terms, it delivers.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As a single-run 2024 limited edition, the composition has not been reformulated or reissued in altered form.

Final Verdict

Dipped in Chocolate is the rare gourmand that behaves like a proper perfume: it opens as an indulgence, then resolves into a creamy sandalwood and benzoin skin scent that feels grown-up and quietly luxurious. The cardamom is the stroke of genius here, keeping the chocolate sharp, green and alive rather than sugary. If you love edible fragrances but want one with architecture, this is a limited edition worth hunting down.
