Maison Asrar Vanguard Review: A Fruity Leather Bomb

A smoky-fruity leather chypre that borrows the Aventus crown — and its swagger.

By Vivir ·
Some fragrances arrive at the door and knock politely. Maison Asrar Vanguard kicks it in. A 2025 release from the Dubai-based house, this unisex eau de parfum is built around the most seductive trick in modern perfumery — the collision of sunlit fruit with smoked leather — and it performs with a confidence that has no business at sixty dollars. The opening is a fruit stand in August: crushed pineapple running sweet and syrupy over a vivid blackcurrant, sharpened by grapefruit zest and a prickle of pink pepper. Sliced apple and bergamot keep the whole thing crystalline rather than candied, so the first ten minutes feel less like dessert and more like iced fruit carried through a cedar grove. Then the temperature drops. Cardamom and ginger flare through the heart, dry and aromatic, with a thread of carnation that lends the composition a clove-tinged, almost vintage elegance. The skeleton of the drydown will be familiar to anyone who has worn Creed's Aventus or Absolu Aventus, and Vanguard happily acknowledges its lineage. But this is no timid tribute. Where those compositions keep their fruit on a leash, Vanguard lets it run headlong into a base of musk, cashmere musk, cedarwood, leather, ambergris and moss — an arrangement with genuine chypre architecture, animalic warmth and a leathery dryness that lingers on skin and fabric for the better part of a day. The community has noticed: a 4.64 out of 5 from 778 votes on Fragrantica is a remarkable score for any fragrance, let alone one this young and this affordable.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

Minutes zero to thirty belong to the fruit. Pineapple arrives first, dripping and golden, immediately shadowed by blackcurrant at its darkest and most jammy. Grapefruit and bergamot cut through with a cold citrus edge, pink pepper adds a rosy sparkle at the nostrils, and apple softens the whole into something juicy and almost edible. It is loud — beautifully, deliberately loud — and the first spray fills a room before you have finished capping the bottle.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

By the one-to-two-hour mark the fruit steps back and the spices take the stage. Cardamom is the star here: green, resinous, faintly eucalyptus-cool. Ginger lends heat and a dry tickle, carnation contributes a clove-like, slightly powdery carnality, and lily of the valley threads a clean, dewy floral line through the middle so the composition never becomes a fruit syrup. The overall impression turns drier, more textured, more adult.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

From roughly hour four onward the base settles in and stays. Leather is unmistakable — smooth, slightly smoky, worn-in rather than harsh — wrapped in a twin musk accord of clean white musk and the softer, more enveloping cashmere musk. Cedarwood gives structure, ambergris adds a salty, skin-like radiance that makes the fragrance feel alive, and moss closes the composition with a chypre-like bitterness that keeps the sweetness in check. The animalic undercurrent is subtle but present, a warm breath against the neck. Expect it to survive a full working day on skin and considerably longer on fabric.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.5/5

Eight-plus hours routinely, with multiple wearers reporting full-day wear and exceptional tenacity on fabric — a scarf sprayed in the morning still carries leather and musk the following day.

Projection 5.0/5

Heavy. Reviewers consistently describe it as a bomb requiring only one or two sprays; a third spray risks overwhelming a car, an office or a dinner table.

Sillage 4.5/5

Strong. Vanguard leaves a visible trail; people will notice you have been in a room, and they will ask what it is.

Pros & Cons

  • Extraordinary performance for the price — eight-plus hours with two-spray projection
  • Rich, natural-smelling fruit opening layered over a genuine leather-musk-chypre base
  • Genuinely unisex, wearable by anyone who enjoys a warm fruity leather
  • Exceptional value at roughly US$60–70 for 100 ml
  • Excellent tenacity on fabric; ideal for cold-weather layering on scarves and coats
  • A 4.64/5 community score from 778 votes speaks to broad appeal
  • Projection is so heavy that over-application is easy and unforgiving
  • Too dense and sweet for hot, humid weather
  • The Aventus-adjacent DNA limits its originality
  • The perfumer is not publicly credited and the concentration is not explicitly stated by the house
  • The sweet fruit opening may read as too much for wearers who prefer dry, austere compositions

Price & Value

$60–$70
AED 220 (approximately US$60) for 100 ml direct from the house, with international and grey-market pricing sitting in the US$60–70 band. For a fragrance delivering this level of projection and longevity, the cost-per-wear is almost absurdly low.

“Outstanding value. Vanguard performs like a niche release at three to four times the price, and even with the homage question hanging over it, the arithmetic is difficult to argue with.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As a 2025 release, Vanguard has a limited track record, and no meaningful reformulation chatter has emerged from the community.

Who It's For

Final Verdict

Maison Asrar Vanguard is a loud, generous, surprisingly sophisticated fruity leather that delivers niche-level performance for the price of a designer impulse buy. It will not win prizes for originality, but it wins every argument about value, and on a cold evening with one spray at the collar, it is genuinely lovely. Sample first if heavy projection is not your language; buy with confidence if it is.
