Nishane Ani X Review: A Brighter Twist on a Modern Classic

Cécile Zarokian reimagines the iconic vanilla powerhouse with a burst of citrus and melon.

By Vivir ·
In 2023, Istanbul-based niche house Nishane celebrated its 10th anniversary by launching the 'X Collection,' a series of reinterpretations of its most successful releases. Among the most anticipated was Ani X, a follow-up to the 2019 global sensation Ani. The original fragrance, named after the ancient Armenian city, became a benchmark for the 'green vanilla' genre, prized for its heavy projection and complex spicy-sweet profile. Ani X is not intended to replace the original but to offer a different perspective. Developed by the same perfumer, Cécile Zarokian, this version aims to address the common critique that the original Ani could be too dense for warmer weather. By introducing a significant citrus and fruit presence, Nishane attempts to bridge the gap between a winter signature and a year-round versatile staple.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The fragrance opens with a sharp, photorealistic blast of lemon and bergamot, immediately distinguished from the original by a juicy melon note and a cooling watery accord. The ginger provides a familiar spicy kick but feels brighter and more effervescent here.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

As the citrus subsides, the heart reveals a more aromatic character. Lavender and sage add a herbal cleanliness, while the green apple and black currant maintain a fruity sweetness that keeps the composition feeling light and modern compared to the original's heavy spice.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

The drydown is where the DNA of the original Ani is most apparent. The signature Zarokian vanilla emerges, supported by creamy sandalwood and soft cashmere wood. However, the presence of white musk and ambergris ensures the finish remains airy rather than syrupy.

Final Verdict

Ani X is a masterfully executed flanker that successfully lightens a heavy masterpiece without losing its soul. It is a mandatory try for vanilla lovers who find the original Ani too suffocating for daily use.
