Imaginary Authors Every Storm A Serenade 2024 Review

A Baltic gale bottled: salt, spruce and ambergris in Imaginary Authors' stormiest story.

By Vivir ·
Imaginary Authors does not sell perfume so much as it sells weather. The Portland house built its reputation on a lovely conceit: every fragrance is presented as the signature scent of a novel that never existed, complete with a fictional author, a publication year and a synopsis printed on the box. Every Storm A Serenade is the coastal volume of that imaginary library — a book you can smell before you ever read a word of it. Composed by house founder and perfumer Josh Meyer and released in 2024 as an eau de parfum, this is a marine woody aromatic built around a note list that reads less like a formula and more like a shipping forecast: Baltic sea mist, eucalyptus absolute, spruce oil, heather, ambergris, vetiver. Fragrantica files it under unisex, where it holds a community rating of 3.84 out of 5 — a figure that tells you something important. This is not a fragrance that flatters everyone on first contact. It is one that rewards patience, attention, and a certain appetite for cold air. What follows is a full breakdown of the 2024 release: how it opens, how it evolves, how long it lasts, who it suits, and whether $115 for 50ml is money well spent.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first spray is a slap of cold air. Calone and the sea notes arrive together — wet, saline, faintly metallic — and the eucalyptus absolute rises immediately behind them, camphoraceous and sharp, closer to a medicinal vapour than to a spa candle. For the first ten minutes this can read almost abrasive: it smells like a storm arriving rather than a fragrance settling in. Give it time.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

As the camphor burns off, spruce and heather take over and the composition changes character entirely. The wet air becomes a wet forest: resinous green needles, a drizzle of balsamic sweetness, the dry honeyed dust of heather growing where the wind never stops. The salt never leaves — it simply stops being the headline. This is the most beautiful phase of the wear, and it lasts roughly an hour to ninety minutes.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

Ambergris and vetiver close the story. The ambergris is the star: warm, mineral, faintly animalic, the smell of skin after a day at the coast. Vetiver keeps it grounded and dry, with a whisper of smoke and earth. By hour five or six you are left with a soft, salty, slightly woody hum close to the skin — intimate, and rather lovely.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 4.0/5

Roughly 6-8 hours on skin, longer on fabric — a reviewer-reported figure of about seven hours on skin matches our experience.

Projection 3.0/5

Moderate and intimate-leaning — roughly arm's length for the first hour, then progressively closer to skin.

Sillage 3.0/5

Moderate. It leaves a distinct but restrained trail; this is not a scent that fills a room.

Pros & Cons

  • Genuinely distinctive atmospheric composition — cold sea air and wet forest rather than another sweet aquatic
  • Quality materials: eucalyptus absolute, spruce oil, a convincing ambergris accord and vetiver
  • Truly unisex and easy to wear in professional settings thanks to its restrained projection
  • Accessible niche pricing at $115 for 50ml, with 14ml and 2ml sizes available for sampling
  • Moderate to intimate performance may not satisfy those who expect more at this price point
  • The camphoraceous eucalyptus opening reads medicinal to some noses
  • Seasonally limited — it can turn sharp and heavy in summer heat
  • No flankers or alternative concentrations exist, so there is only one version to try

Price & Value

$115 (50ml EDP)
At $115 for 50ml of eau de parfum, Every Storm A Serenade sits at the accessible end of the niche market, and the house also offers 14ml and 2ml sizes for sampling.

“Fair value. The materials read as quality, six to eight hours is respectable for a marine, and the smaller sizes let you test the polarising opening before committing to a full bottle.”

Final Verdict

Every Storm A Serenade is not a crowd-pleaser and does not try to be. It is a cold, saline, resinous piece of atmospheric perfumery that opens like bad weather and dries down like warm skin, asking for a little patience in exchange for a genuinely unusual wear. If you have ever wanted to smell like the Baltic in November, this is your bottle — if you want compliments from across the room, look elsewhere.
