Imaginary Authors The Abandoned Mansion Review 2025

A quiet cedar-and-oakmoss meditation from Imaginary Authors

By Vivir · · Updated
Imaginary Authors has spent more than a decade selling a very specific kind of fantasy. Every bottle from the Portland, Oregon house is presented as a book that never existed, written by an author who never lived. The Abandoned Mansion, released in 2025, continues that tradition, and it may be the quietest, most introspective entry in the line to date. Where releases like A City on Fire and Cape Heartache announce themselves from across a room, The Abandoned Mansion creeps in. Cedar, quince and petitgrain open the composition. A single warm-spicy heart of pimento holds the middle. A base of oakmoss and ambreine settles everything into something that smells like dust motes drifting through afternoon light in a house nobody has entered in years. It is a unisex, extrait-style eau de parfum priced between roughly $50 and $115 depending on size, and it currently holds a 3.76 out of 5 rating on Fragrantica across 303 votes. That is a respectable but not rapturous score, and it tells you something important. The Abandoned Mansion is not built to please a crowd. It is built to please a reader.

Scent Journey

1
Opening 0-30 min

The first spray is cedar-forward and surprisingly bright. Quince arrives almost immediately, tart and slightly waxy, while petitgrain adds a cool green shimmer on top. It reads as a walk through an overgrown orchard in late September: fruit on the ground, wood smoke somewhere in the distance, air turning cold.

2
Heart 1-2 hrs

As the top notes burn off, pimento steps forward and the fragrance warms noticeably. The clove-like spice softens the cedar's sharper edges and begins to pull the composition toward its base. The quince is largely gone by the one-hour mark, leaving a dry spiced wood accord that feels considerably more serious than the opening suggested.

3
Drydown 4+ hrs

Oakmoss and ambreine take over. This is the most rewarding phase and also the quietest. The moss brings a damp, earthy bitterness; the ambreine wraps it in a warm, slightly saline amber glow. The result is a skin-close, faintly dusty scent that smells like the inside of an old wooden chest.

Performance Dashboard

Longevity 3.0/5

Moderate. Roughly four to six hours on skin, with the final two reading as a close skin scent. On clothing it lasts considerably longer.

Projection 2.0/5

Soft to moderate. An arm's-length fragrance at best, and for much of its life it sits closer than that.

Sillage 3.0/5

Moderate. It leaves a soft trail for the first couple of hours, then pulls in tight to the body.

Pros & Cons

  • Distinctive, atmospheric cedar-and-oakmoss composition that avoids the usual niche clichés
  • High-quality materials, including oakmoss absolute and ambreine
  • Accessible niche pricing between $50 and $115 for 50ml
  • Excellent for fall and winter wear, and easy to layer
  • Genuinely unisex, with no gendered marketing baggage
  • Moderate longevity of roughly four to six hours
  • Soft projection that stays close to the skin for much of its life
  • The fruity quince top note fades quickly, which may disappoint buyers drawn to it
  • Not a crowd-pleasing scent and unlikely to generate compliments from strangers
  • The brand's own note list includes a Paperbacks note that the Fragrantica pyramid omits, creating some confusion

Price & Value

$50-$115
Priced at the accessible end of the niche market for a 50ml bottle, which is consistent with the rest of the Imaginary Authors line.

“Fair value if you measure a fragrance by distinctiveness and material quality rather than by hours of detectable wear. Weak value if you want maximum projection per dollar.”

Reformulation History

No significant batch variations reported. As a 2025 launch, bottles currently in circulation come from early production runs.

Final Verdict

The Abandoned Mansion is not a fragrance designed to win votes, and its 3.76 rating reflects that. It is quiet, dry, slightly dusty and deeply atmospheric: a cedar-and-oakmoss meditation with a brief flash of quince and a warm ambreine finish. Wear it for yourself, in cool weather, with a book in your hand.
